A name for a "Friends and Relations of Fedora" top-level category?

We currently have a CentOS category at this site’s top level.

We have an exciting announcement coming tomorrow about another distro, and they’d like space here as well.

I don’t want to have too many top level categories, so I think we should make a new one for, basically, Friends and Relations. In addition to distros, this could be, for example, hardware partners — if they want it, of course (we wouldn’t just set these up arbitrarily).

Right now, Friends and Relations is the only idea I have, but I don’t like it, for two reasons:

  • Confusing with the Friends foundation
  • Sounds too much like a social category

So… other ideas, anyone?

Fedora based Distributions ?
Fedora related Distributions ?

So to brainstorm:

  • Circles
  • Connections
  • Others
  • Neighbors/Neighborhood
    – village
    – town
    – …

I actually like the Neighbors idea as it seems to be exact description of the thing you are proposing.

I’m was thinking “Ecosystem” but that might be overly broad?

“Neighbors” is good, but I worry that trying to use a metaphor will increase the chance of confusion across cultures and languages. Of the “descriptive” names suggested so far, “Neighbors” is my favorite.

More stuff:

  • “Related” - same as “Others”, sounds a bit dismissive, like “read more”

  • “Birds of a feather” - well known term, not sure if we can abuse it this way

  • How about Fellowship?

I love these two

This sounds awesome! :100:

Aleksandra, you may be the only person at Red Hat who is good at naming things. :classic_smiley:

I like Neighbors (maybe “Fedora Neighborhood”?) best for meaning, but “Fellowship” is perhaps the most fun. I’m worried about assumptions that it relates somehow to an academic appointment. But maybe too worried.

Since this can be changed reasonably easily, I’m going go go with a quick decision. (Until after my Flock session, my capricious whims can be indulged, right?) But, let’s do a show of hands!

Pick your favorite!
  • Fellowship of Fedora
  • Fedora Fellowship
  • Fedora Neighborhood
  • Fedora Neighbors
  • Birds of a Feather
  • Our Neighbors
  • Connections
  • Connected Projects
  • Related Projects
  • Fedora Circles
  • Extended Circle
  • Our Ecosystem
  • Extended Ecosystem
  • Some slight tweak of one of these
  • Something else entirely

I like Fellowship as in LOTR, but indeed the first thing I get when reading Fedora Fellowship without context is the kind of academia internship or grant. Fellowship of Fedora does make it better.

Agreed. “Fellowship of” is great, “… Fellowship” is the confusing one

Also Neighbor is mine, but for the Fellowship I cheated and looked into the list of synonyms of the word Friends

Reading it further gives you also cohorts and familiars.

But honestly speaking, I read so much fantasy that familiar used as a noun is very different from what the dictionary describes.

Interesting. Chef actually uses “family” to describe distributions that are similar but not identical. Ansible too I think (AFK so can’t confirm)

Looks like Our Neighbors wins — for now at least!

Voting was way too fast! After first reading I thought on “allies” as it sounds more informal than “partners”, but Neighbors sounds good too.

Yeah, I just needed to set up something quickly. We can rename if a better idea comes up.

I do agree.

But in the end it is important what comes in to the category description. If someone translates it it has to give some sens, that it is understandable also in a translated version.

Now for me the question comes up what the real neighbors are? Fedora based distributions ? Or just Distros who have a relation with RH like Centos ?

No, not necessarily anything Red Hat (or RHEL).

Also, I’m planning to move CentOS to this category in a little bit. Existing links should still work and there should be a link at top-level (like the ones for other subcategories). Does anyone think I should announce that more widely beforehand?

Yes. The opposite of engagement is surprise.
