Hi all, this is my first post and I’m newbie in Linux. I have a network problem and I don’t know how to fix it:
Machine: Desktop with fedora 42 WS, intel i7-3770s 8GBram, Tplink AC1300 usb wifi adapter
Problem: yesterday I navigated fine but today wifi shows as connected but can’t navigate.
After few minutes a question mark shows on the connection symbol but the status is stil connected?!?
What I already did:
forget the network and connect again it seems to connect but can’t actually navigate.
I can’t ping google, I can’t ping my router.
My other wifi devices are working fine connected to the same network.
I tried to fixfiles and reboot with selinux set to permissive. Now I have several denial in AVC.
I tried restarting NetworkManager it seems to navigate for 1 second then nothing.
Dmesg | grep wlp0s20u4 shown that wlan seems to try to authenticate to a MAC address for 3 times and then fail… can I try something else before hard reset?
Yep, tried already in switching usb ports. I’ll try to connect via Ethernet and update as you suggested. But it is weird cause everything worked fine and then suddenly I got no internet.
But maybe is faster to hard formatting at this point, since I have no Ethernet cable atm.
I’ve come to realize that having a wired option is a must nowadays. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve had issues with wireless cards and adapters not working properly after a fresh install, whether it was Windows or Linux. And it’s always due to a driver that needs to be activated and/or updated. Looking at you, Broadcom.
Although I had laptop and my phone connected over wifi correctly, I tried to restart my router. Everything is working now, well I’ve lost a morning over it, at least I learned some more commands.
Yeah you are right about the wiring, but I’m out of town, I don’t have my magic box of spare wires .
Anyway, I flashed an usb, in case of more problems I just format.
I didn’t recommend restarting the router because you said your other device was connecting fine but yeah, it could make sense if the router decided to assign your laptop a conflicting IP address. If it happens again, maybe log into the router and check if there are any static IPs on your LAN and that they’re out of the DHCP range (which is used for dynamic/automatic assignment). Also, check if your laptop is using a static or dynamic IP.
