Why does the Software app in Fedora (42) suggests to install flatpack over RPMs from Fedora?

While I understand flatpacks are “good” in terms that they enable more stability on the system, if the software is in the Fedora RPM repos, shouldn’t we seek to install it from there to avoid a bloated system?

Sorry if the question is dumb, I’m coming back to Linux after a few years, and this is the first time I really try to use it for my personal laptop…

Welcome (back) to :fedora: !

There’s a long debate in the Fedora space about Flatpaks vs RPMs, as well as Fedora vs Flathub Flatpaks, no point of detailing that here, you’ll find the topics here on Discourse if you search them.

Do notice, though, that it’s Fedora Flatpaks that take precedence, which are built based on Fedora packaged RPMs.

If you’d like to change the preference order, moving RPMs to the top of the list, you can run:

gsettings set org.gnome.software packaging-format-preference "['rpm', 'flatpak:fedora-testing', 'flatpak:fedora']"
