About Discourse
Discourse is an all-open source forum platform with a modern design and decent-enough features for interacting via email. It’s becoming really popular for other open source projects too — big things like Python, Mozilla, GNOME, and the Linux Foundation; more niche technology like Matplotlib or Home Assistant; and communities like PIXLS.US for free and open-source photography and the Destination Linux Network.
Fedora has long been centered around our mailing lists, and I don’t expect those to go away in the foreseeable future — see Hyperkitty for a web interface to those lists. But over time, I hope to see more and more of our conversations move here. If you prefer, you can get posts by email and interact almost entirely that way.
The Discourse-based approach is easier for new contributors to get on board with, and offers advantages for all of us as well. There are rich posting features, like images, easy markdown formatting for posts (including formatted code blocks), likes/reactions, and polls[1]. If you make a mistake, you can edit to correct typos. And topics can easily be moved, split, or joined — as we all know, long mailing list threads tend to go off into deep tangents, and this can keep that under control, both keeping the main topic focused and providing a space for the side-conversation.[2]
