Update 40.20240811.0 Causes Repeated Logouts

Hello everyone,

since the update 40.20240809.0 (2024-08-09T00:45:08Z) I have the problem that I get logged out in different situations.
I think mainly when I work with multiple virtual desktops and switch between them.

Today I installed the update 40.20240811.0 (2024-08-11T04:07:47Z) as I hoped it would improve things, but unfortunately this is not the case.
I haven’t lost any data yet, but some permissions have been corrupted.

Hmm, did you try another keyboard? This could be a hardware issue?

What keys do you press to switch virtual desktops? Are these related to logging out? Can you check keyboard shortcuts in GNOME settings?

Added framework

None, multitouch on an external touchpad

here are some logs i just pulled from the gnome logs application shortly after the error occurred.

the desktop crashed at about 22:00

I’m also seeing random logouts on Fedora 40. I realize you’re running Silverblue, but I’m pretty sure this is the same issue?

Similarities:

  • I’m also seeing random logouts without data corruption or crash reporting
  • I’m also seeing the error message Gdm: on_display_removed: assertion 'GDM_IS_REMOTE_DISPLAY (display)' failed
  • I also have AMD Ryzen
  • I also have a multitouch trackpad
  • I’ve noticed this issue in the past week. It has been quite disruptive. It’s basically daily.

Differences:

  • I’m using Fedora 40, not SilverBlue
  • I’ve noticed this issue to be independent of navigation and workspace switching
    • It’s happened when I’ve just been sitting and watching YouTube videos in my Chrome browser.
    • It’s happened when I’ve been doing complex tasks.

I’ve been experiencing random logouts for about the last week. I initially figured it was something I did, so I can’t give a specific date. But, I re-imaged my computer with Fedora, and I’ve been seeing the same issue. I dual boot Windows, and I haven’t had any issues with Windows, which indicates it’s Fedora-specific.

To be clear, my experience has been that my computer will randomly completely log out, and close all windows and programs. It does not trigger any crash reporting. It has happened when I’ve been actively navigating, and while passively watching youtube videos.

After logging back in, I’m seeing the same log, which is the only “Important” log in the “logs” application:

Gdm: on_display_removed: assertion 'GDM_IS_REMOTE_DISPLAY (display)' failed

I don’t know of a good way to share logs on these forms, but I ran journalctl --boot=0 --since "2024-08-27 20:20" --until "2024-08-27 20:23" for more information, and I’ve shared the results on PasteBin. I see your same error message at Aug 27 20:21:21.

Just wanted to add to this conversation!
I hope this helps narrow down the issue.
It’s been really disruptive to me. If there’s a better way to file a bug report, let me know.

Thanks!

I just experienced another logout with the same error Gdm: on_display_removed: assertion 'GDM_IS_REMOTE_DISPLAY (display)' failed.

I ran journalctl --boot=0 --since "2024-08-28 08:22" --until "2024-08-28 08:24", and dumped the logs into pastebin. I saw the error message at Aug 28 08:23:48 in the logs.

I believe these are not serious, it is only testing whether the GDM session is local or remote. This should not be related to the logouts you are experiencing.

Ah, gotcha. Thanks. :+1:
