System Security: Supervisor Password Required

Lenovo X1 Yoga asking for Supervisor Password at boot up. I can buy the laptop quite cheap (through reputable seller) due to this problem. Am I right in thinking it could be solved by shifting it to Fedora (which I’d want to do anyway)?
thanks

If the password is in BIOS/UEFI, it must be entered before any OS can be booted. Reputable dealers sell such laptops as parts donors – not as usable systems. If there was an easy way to reset the password they would do that and raise the price.

Just to be super explicit - @joeyjonnson whoever is selling that laptop, unless it is very explicitly marked with giant blinking orange lights as being for spare parts harvesting only, is not a reputable seller. Such laptops would most likely show up in the market via either a police auction of seized property, or as directly stolen goods themselves.

Thanks. It’s being sold as for spares/not working. If I put a new SSD in it and had a bootable Fedora installer USB, would that get round the problem by booting and installing OS from USB?

It was seized from auction. the SSD has been removed so there’s no data on it.

See George’s comment then - that password is set within the BIOS/UEFI system that controls everything about how the system boots, including the ability to even look at a hard drive or USB drive to then look for operating systems. With the system locked at that point, it won’t ever get to the point of checking for an installer on a USB.

Ah, I’ll give it a miss then. Thought it was worth asking! Thanks
