Struggling with playing DVD on Fedora

Hello Fedora-Community!

I want to be able to watch DVDs on Fedora Silverblue (41). I am using an external dvd drive that works just fine on Windows.

I’ve been reading up on the steps need to play DVDs on Fedora and have accordingly installed the rpmfusion and libdvdcss but the vlc media player still is not able to play my DVD.

A screeshot of my Layered Packages:

In my desperation I seem to have installed some packages twice.

When i start the vlc via the terminal i get back a few errors:

to me it looks like vlc is not able to decode the disc and can only read the most basic info like the region setting.

Using different players like the gnome player (totem) or celluloid didn’t work either.

When using the vlc player provided via Flatpak it seems to be doing just the same: indicating that it can read the most basic info like title of the dvd but doesn’t play it.

I would much appreciate any help!

Try to put your user into the cdrom group to see if this helps. Not forget to re-login.

sudo rpm-ostree install vlc try vlc from fedora repo

vlc from flathub includes more codecs than the rpm version or the flatpak from fedora. For movies, there is also the issue with dvdcss.
