Hi,
I have a Dell XPS laptop with an Intel graphics card that I recently upgraded to Fedora 36. After the upgrade I noticed an issue with the software MedeA I have been using. The MedeA screen freezes when I load a molecular structure. I contacted their tech support who said the issue is most probably with the Intel graphics. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem? Thanks.
While you may be reaching the limit of capabilities for an integrated graphics card, you might be able to increase the memory allocation for the video card in your BIOS settings. If you have a discrete video card (as I imagine you probably do on an XPS), you can try using that instead. If you’re using Gnome, right click on the launcher and if you see an “Launch with Discrete Graphics” option, click that. If you’re not using Gnome, you can try starting your program with DRI_PRIME=1
.
If you’re still stuck, please give us the output of inxi -SMCIG
in preformatted or code block format.
Thank you. We tried your suggestion but it does not seem to work. We even tried to install nvidia-drivers and even legacy ones but none of them seem to work.

Hi Scott,
Does the output of inxi -SMCIG suggest what the problem is? Thanks.
Dear All,
Can I get some help with this? This problem occurred after I upgraded to Fedora 36. Thanks.
Information was requested and you failed to respond.
Please post the output of inxi -Fzxx
so we can see the system info. Post that in the </> Preformatted text tags on the toolbar above so it retains the formatting you see on the screen and it is easier for us to read and interpret.
Thank you. We tried your suggestion but it does not seem to work. We even tried to install nvidia-drivers and even legacy ones but none of them seem to work.

Hi Jeff,
I just uploaded the output of inxi-Fzxx in the format you requested. Please let me know if this is in the right format. Thanks.
Madhu
Dear All,
I have uploaded the outputs of inxi - Fzxx and inxi -SMCIG. Could I get help with my problem please? Thanks.
A 4th gen intel cpu with integrated graphics and an nvidia 750M gpu are quite old.
I don’t see a driver for either the intel or the nvidia GPU loaded.
Please post the output of
lsmod | grep -iE 'nvidia|nouveau'
dnf repolist
and
dnf list installed \*nvidia\*
Also we need to know if fedora has been fully updated with dnf upgrade --refresh
That inxi output shows kernel 5.19.6 which is near the initial fedora 36 kernel at release time.
Hi Jeff,
Thanks. Here are the two outputs you requested. Please note that the software uses libXScrnSaver mesa-libGLU freeglut:

Ok, now I see 3 separate and related issues.
- The version of the packages you have installed are 515.76 and the latest with the best support for the 30XX GPUs is 520.56.
- we need to see why nvidia-gpu-firmware does not show in that package list. I think it is required for your card.
- You have two conflicting packages
kmod-nvidia.x86_64 3:515.76-1.fc36 @rpmfusion-nonfree-updates
kmod-nvidia-5.19.16-602.inttf.fc36.x86_64.x86_64 3:515.76-1.fc36 @@commandline
The first was installed directly and should not be there. The second was automatically built by the akmod-nvidia package and is the desired one.
There is an inconsistency in the kernel version you show though. Mine shows as
kmod-nvidia-5.19.16-200.fc36.x86_64.x86_64 3:520.56.06-1.fc36 @@commandline
so it seems you are not using a stock kernel. What is special about your install that is not a clean fedora install?
You should first remove the existing nvidia packages to prepare for a clean new install of the drivers with the latest version. dnf remove \*nvidia\*
Next install the firmware. sudo dnf install nvidia-gpu-firmware
Now reboot.
Run dnf list installed *nvidia*
to verify that all nvidia packages except the firmware have been removed.
Finally install the latest nvidia drivers. dnf install akmod-nvidia-520* xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda
and verify that it will install the 520.56 version of everything before you say yes.
Once that install is complete wait at least 5 minutes for the new driver modules to be built, then reboot. This reboot now should load the nvidia drivers.
If there is any problem with this procedure let us know so we can find out why.
Thanks Jeff. The issue is still not resolved. Here is what I did:
I removed everything Nvidia
verified that only nvidia-gpu-firmware is installed
[root@localhost ~]# dnf list installed *nvidia*
Installed Packages
nvidia-gpu-firmware.noarch 20221012-141.fc36 @updates
then
[root@localhost ~]# dnf install akmod-nvidia-520* xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda

Everything there looks good except the failure to load the nvidia driver.
Please post the output of dmesg | grep -i secure
At this point I suspect that secure boot is enabled and prevents loading the modules. If so then it is relatively simple to boot into the bios, either from the grub menu or by using a key at power on to enter the bios. Once in the bios the security tab usually allows disabling secure boot. (it may be necessary to also disable tpm before you can disable secure boot.)
Hi Jeff,
Thanks. Here is the output of dmesg | grep -i secure:

Ok, secure boot is disabled so that would not interfere.
For more info, shortly after a reboot please run lsmod | grep nvidia
, dmesg | grep -iE 'nouveau|nvidia'
, dnf list installed kmod-nvidia*
, and inxi Fzxx
and post those results please.
