Slow startup

Hi everyone,

I wonder if someone could help me resolve this problem where the Bluetooth service takes ages to start when booting up.

This is part of the journal that shows it’s taken 16 seconds for the service to start. KDE shows a splash screen during this load time.

Dec 24 20:18:47 mdpc systemd[1970]: Started xdg-desktop-portal.service - Portal service.
Dec 24 20:19:03 mdpc systemd[1970]: Started obex.service - Bluetooth OBEX service.

I’m on Fedora 41 with all the updates installed.

The critical chain appears to show that tuned-ppd is taking 24 seconds to start.

analyze-blame shows that bluetooth starts at 24ms.

Right right, I see now!

I’m going to search and see if there are any workarounds for that but wondered if you have anything on top of your head related to this or as a solution please.

I suspect it has to do with my GPU (Radeon RX 7800xt) and its driver or my CPU (AMD Ryzen 9700X) based on the error messages I get in my tuned.log:

What do you have in the /var/log/tuned-ppd.log?

Don’t sweat the ERROR lines in the tuned.log you posted - they are not the issue. We’re looking for what causes a 24.04 second delay in tuned-ppd starting up.

It may be beneficial to run (and eyeball it yourself as you know what your system did for this specific start up) systemd-analyze plot > ~/startup-info.svg and then open ~/startup-info.svg to see exactly what the entire boot process looks like and what is being held up waiting for something else. If I look at my current boot, my machine spent a minute running akmods as I’d just upgraded the kernel, but that’s not a typical thing that happens every time I boot… as a result, my current boot looks nothing like a “standard” boot.

Eyeball that SVG file, and post a copy, and we’ll see if we can’t work out what tuned-ppd is actually having to wait for on your specific machine. As noted from my example, try to make this a “normal” boot so we don’t get swamped with a large delay from something out of the ordinary taking place.

Thanks for the insights! I looked at my system boot plot and couldn’t see anything blocking the tuned-ppd but that’s my untrained eyes and my lack of knowledge of what I exactly should be looking for. I have attached my boot plot for your reference.

It was the tuned-ppdlog I was more interested in, for the power profile daemon. I normally use a desktop, so my tuned-ppd log normally simply tells me I’m on AC power and that’s it. However, I do have a laptop and the time for tuned-ppd on that Lenovo i5 tin is 204 milliseconds - not 24 full seconds, so I was interested in what exactly it logged in the tuned-ppd log to be around 120 times slower.

Can you also post the logs from the upower.service journalctl -b -u upower.service please.

Out of interest, what power profile setting are you using?

Looking at that svg file I see the following
~18 seconds for the bios and grub before the kernel loads.
Then I see
upower.service with 25.368 seconds
cups.service with 20.049 seconds
tuned-ppd.service with 23.990 seconds

I wonder if upower.service and tuned.service are conflicting?
Both upower and tuned-ppd are active until the end of boot.

In analyzing that chart the red lines are the length of time each service takes to complete loading.

I’m on the Balanced most of the time but I have tried the Performance too.

Now, this might be relevant to all of this. This installation that I have is upgraded all the way from Fedora 29 to 41. The initial installation was on a Dell laptop which I gradually moved to another PC and then moved into this one. So, could it be the settings are still for a laptop? (Sorry for the very noob questions I ask)

Potentially one fix may be to do a new clean install. There have been many changes across the board in 6 years (12 release versions), and moving your drives from one system to another may or may not result in problems. Tuned though is relatively new so I have no way to judge the effect.

Bugger - I was hoping for something a bit more interesting than the couple of lines in lthose logs.

I’d have to guess that moving an installation from laptop to laptop as it was continually upgraded SHOULD be perfectly OK but having never done that I’m only making an assumption. Perhaps it’s causing issues.

If you have the ability to do so, maybe carving out a small partition, just large enough to take a standard F41 installation and popping it on there, then comparing systemd-analyze plot and blame between the two. If they are identical (or near enough) then you’ve lost nothing. however, if there’s a marked improvement then you can probably assume /something/ (and I can’t tell what the something is from these logs) is getting in the way and that a fresh, clean install of F41 might be the easiest way forward.

I’ll post a boot plot from my pc next time I get back to it for comparison purposes - install of F40 then upgraded to F41 and always on the same desktop.
