Returning to Linux after years

Hi All,
I used to like Arch Linux a lot on my dekstop, but then wife gifted me a Macbook Pro with M2 and my desktop did not switch on for 3 years. Recently I had to work from home however, the big monitor was occupied by her so I thought of reusing my desktop. Fired up and Arch loaded perfectly. Even after 3 years the updates happened and there were some hiccups. I think I got used to of Mac so wanted to change to something easier. My first attempt was Pop_OS, that amazing distribution simply failed to boot due to my GTX 1070 Nvidia card incompatibility with Wayland. Same issues with Ubuntu 26.04 and Kubuntu 26.04. Ofcourse I did the usual tricks like nomodeset, but nothing worked. Then I did a sweet hack, installed Lubuntu 26.04, which is on X11 and then installed ubuntu-desktop. All my Nvidia drivers were super easy to install. However, the fonts and look and feel in general was very ugly. Maybe due to a combination of Lubuntu + Ubuntu, but it looked no way comparable to my Mac. A Freiend suggested to install Fedora KDE and I was amazed to see that despite having Wayland, Fedora booted up fine with GTC 1070 ( pascal). Without Nvidia drivers, it was not good, but after install and drivers ( 580 version for pascal ), now my desktop looks amazing. I would still not say that its same as Mac, which is still more beautiful, however, Fedora KDE is the best looking Linux I have seen. Its so fast, everything works fine. I’m planning to host my local LLM on it and make it my fun desktop.

Thank you Fedora.

Happy to hear you like it :classic_smiley:

If you need nvidia drivers, keep in mind that every Linux can have issues occasionally, as this is less a Linux or distribution issue but an nvidia issue due to how they provide their software.

But we have many and experienced users to help mitigate this and achieve a smooth experience. If issues come up with that, you can reach out to ask.fedora with the #nvidia tag, and share. All the best with your Fedora!
