A 10 years old Macbook Pro gets a new life with Fedora 41 KDE

I don’t know where to put this but I gotta share it as I’m impressed!

So I have this old Macbook Pro from like 2015-2016. I used Macs back at work but I no longer work and I have no use for macOS any more and the latest macOS doesn’t even work on it. I’ve been a Windows user mostly. My boss let me keep it so I kept it but I never used it and it felt wrong to just toss it or sell it, as it was gift and the hardware is decent: it’s got 5th gen Core i7, 16GB of RAM and 1TB SATA SSD, nice screen, and the battery still holds 2-3 hours. It was like top of the line when new.

So I’ve installed Windows 11 on it and it mostly worked, but it was sluggish, Bluetooth didn’t work and the trackpad didn’t work either, like at all. So, it was OK’ish with a USB mouse for desktop use but it was useless as an actual laptop. Oh, and the display scaling was very poor under Windows, it has the “retina display” with 2560x1600 resolution.

I tried Linux Mint and Ubuntu with Cinnamon and some things didn’t work either though I can’t remember exactly now what was wrong, it’s been couple of years.

So, recently I’ve installed Fedora 41 KDE on it and… EVERYTHING works! My jaw dropped. Bluetooth works, WiFi works, Thunderbolt Gigabit Ethernet dongle works, the trackpad works, even two-finger tap works as a right-click! The screen looks great and it’s noticeably quicker than under Windows 11 too.
