Questions on adding a second drive

Hi! I’m writing here because of this situation: I recently purchased a 2,5” SSD for my laptop with Fedora as a second drive so I can expand storage (The mains storage at this moment is a NVMe SSD, which came from the store). A found a couple of threads in this forum on how to add a second drive to the system. But more than for a how-to guide, I am writing first to fully understand how that works: I’ve read that if I add a second drive to an existing partition, if one of the drives fails at some point, for whatever reason, it would compromise the whole data of the system; I’ve also read that it is not recommendable to locate the /home directory on the second drive, but that it is possible. So I want to know what is the most recommendable way to mount this second drive for expanding storage (so I can still install games, software programs, and keep files), and why it is recommendable. I’ve been using Fedora (and Linux) since 8 months ago, and I have no fear on using the terminal, but this is my first time with all of this topic on partitions. So, I need more comprehension of what it is and what it implies on the recommended ways you could suggest me and guide, please.

To keep it simple, I just add a second drive with it’s own EXT 4 partition.
I keep all my backups, music and videos on it. I can add games to it via Lutris if I want.
I keep all my Fedora software on the first drive.
