PC freezes after waking it up

Hello,

I have an issue on my new computer, where every time I wake it up the next morning after it suspends and goes into sleep all night it does so with a lot of lag and then it freezes completely after a random amount of time suffering crashes and visual glitches like white bars, having to shut it down from the power button every time. Sometimes straight-up rebooting won’t help, I have to use the PC until it crashes/freezes, then hard reset to go back to normal, this is uncommon, but it’s the worst when it happens.

I have also noticed that I have never seen the Splash Screen at all (I will test it tonight by disabling plymouthd with sudo setenforce 0 and see if it’s the culprit). When I boot up, restart, wake it up, never. Not sure if that’s normal. This happens on both GNOME and KDE Plasma 6, Fedora 42 and Fedora 43. Here are some potentially-helpful logs, not sure if there’s more I can share to help:

This also might be related or not, but sometimes, when I boot up, the cursor lags hard for 1-2 seconds every time I open any app, whether it’s the Terminal/Konsole, Files/Dolphin, Brave, Lutris, anything. Same thing when I close the window, the cursor lags hard. I have to restart the PC to fix that, and it tends to happen after installing updates or when booting it up after this freeze for example. Not always, but it’s very common.

That command sets SELinux into permissive mode and has nothing to do with disabling plymouthd. It should change the error related to plymouthd though.

So far nothing has fixed it. I am currently testing disabling Sleep/Dim Screen/Turn Off Screen/Screen Lock. Disabling just Turn Off Screen did not fix it, I am currently trying with both Dim Screen and Turn Off Screen disabled.

While lagging, both Konsole and Desktop Effects crashed randomly while in use. I then ran these commands:

-------- In TTY I ran sudo dmesg | tail -n 200 | grep -iE "nvrm|xid|gpu|fault" > ~/gpu_error.log

I also tried kwin_wayland --replace & and kquitapp6 plasmashell outside TTY to restart them and see if that could fix it, but none did. I also ran top or System Monitor, but nothing goes beyond 5% to 20% of usage ever, CPU, memory, GPU… I also made sure the discrete GPU was still being used with glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer" which showed the discrete GPU just fine.

The AI thinks the cause is the GPU + Wayland. Probably because I’m using Hybrid Nvidia GPU + AMD GPU, it says that this line is a suspect amdgpu 0000:16:00.0: [drm] Cannot find any crtc or sizes because "That means the driver didn’t detect any active display connectors or outputs on that GPU at that moment — basically, it loaded fine, but it had no monitor to drive or it got confused by hybrid GPU setup. This is what is happening:

  • Your PC goes to sleep.
  • Both GPUs go to low power.
  • The kernel wakes the AMD iGPU first, fails to find displays → spam of warnings.
  • Then NVIDIA wakes, but the kernel’s display stack (DRM/KMS) is half confused → compositor (kwin_wayland) stutters or crashes, and you get the white bars / visual glitches / lag."

Now of course, the AI is giving a lot of suggestions I don’t want to try because I fear messing this up further. I am only using commands that give me logs, restart some services I know like plasma or wayland, but now it is telling me to fully disable the AMD iGPU and it’s giving me scripts that will run right after waking up so the GPU or Wayland restarts, something like that. I rather hear from someone first, but it’s pretty difficult to find anything about this online so far. I won’t give up on the Sleep feature yet.

You are wise to avoid spamming your system with commands suggested by the AI. Those are often out of date and may be just wrong. AI is still very new and relies upon what it may find from the internet.

Does the freeze occur every time?

Does the system have the ability in the bios to disable the iGPU (amd)? If so that might be a troubleshooting step. Disable the iGPU and boot with only the nvidia dGPU active to compare the results.

Yeah, AI has given me some insane suggestions before, been there lol

Regarding its consistency, it’s very common, but doesn’t always happen. Sometimes I go play videogames in my Xbox for 40+ minutes, and when I wake it up it lags, sometimes it doesn’t, specially if the session was very short. It seems to happen only when it goes to sleep, not just turning the screen off/diming it. Same when I myself go to sleep for 8hrs, it tends to be more common here, like 4 out of every 5 times (like 3 days ago and some others I woke up, pressed the space bar 3 times to wake it up, put my password, and then everything worked fine, no lag at all).

I will try locking it/putting it to sleep myself next time the lag happens, I’m just afraid about these events damaging the hardware or not, hence why I’ve been slow testing this, waiting for it to happen naturally. If it happens again after having disabled “Dim Display Automatically,” I’ll do it, I’ll try disabling Sleep and then Screen Locking next time this happens. I’ll also test disabling the AMD iGPU if possible and update this with the results.

Curious enough, this morning, after going to sleep for 8hrs, waking up and pressing the space bar a few times to wake the PC up, it didn’t ask for my password; it did not lock the screen, it put me right back at the paused YouTube video Brave tab I was watching last night, but with the lag present. That has never happened before, it always asks for the password, except this time I disabled “Turn Off Screen” only. No media was playing in the background, no video or audio; I always make sure the PC is capable of going to sleep before I do. I’ll see if that happens again with both Dim Automatically and Turn Off Screen disabled together.

I also use two monitors: a Samsung 4K TV and the other is some expensive Chinese monitor I found in Amazon that runs 4K just fine. The Samsung requires HDMI to HDMI, while the monitor needs a DisplayPort to Mini-HDMI. Both are set at 4K, 60Hz, HDR enabled, prefer efficiency with Color accuracy, etc. I don’t think these could be the issue, but I’ll mention them just in case.

Another pattern I found weird: I remember disabling “Use graphics acceleration when available” in my Brave browser, and it felt like that fixed it for a few days I remember, but today, when the lag happened again, I went to check it out and it was enabled. I swear I forgot if I enabled it again or not, or if it enabled itself alone with an update or something weird, because I’ve dealt with some weird similar bugs/unexpected behaviors recently, not sure if the lag situation itself is to blame, but, one of them changed the output of my audio by itself, like, I renamed the HDMI port 2 as “Samsung 4k TV” weeks ago to identify it easier, however, last night, it randomly started outputting the audio through my monitor, not the TV. I had to rename the ports again; identify which one was the TV now and remove the previous one. I never touched the cables at all, it just happened out of nowhere after a reboot, update, or lag, forgot which one exactly. Also, the icon for “Notifications available” would not go away when this was happening, although there were no updates available no matter how many times I refreshed, the machine was already up to date. It wasn’t until I rebooted that it disappeared. I also have a post here regarding a Bluetooth issue I have, which I now blame my headphones for, but every time the PC wakes up from sleep, the Bluetooth issue gets triggered (I fixed this by making a button on my top bar that runs sudo systemctl restart bluetooth.service without asking for the password when I press it). An account I have in a Google Chrome extension in Brave gets signed out every time the PC goes to sleep too, prompting me to log it back in every time I wake it up, but that’s probably by design, though, to protect it because it’s important, which I don’t mind that much, but still, these inconveniences won’t stop piling up.

My settings have always been:

Screen Locking

Lock screen automatically - 60 minutes
Delay before password requires - 5 seconds

Power Management

Suspend Session:

When inactive: Sleep - After 15 minutes

Display and Brightness:

Dim automatically - Never (used to have it on 5 minutes)
Turn off screen - Never (used to have it on 10 minutes)
When locked - 1 minute

Other settings:

Switch to power profile - Leave unchanged
When inactive - Run after 10 minutes

Sorry for the long text, but I think this is pretty much the entire full context now. Cannot add much more, only tests and results. I’ll take the time, I get distracted with a lot, but I never forget to update these, I promise.

Forgot to add: using NVIDIA 580.95.05 | Kernel driver in use: nvidia | Kernel modules: nouveau, nvidia_drm, nvidia

I disabled the iGPU, but the lag happened again this morning. I found this option in my BIOS, “Integrated Graphics” that was set on “UMA Auto.” The other options were: “Disabled,” “Force,” “Game Mode,” I choose “Disabled.” It took a while to boot up again, but it did, and I verified only the nvidia gpu is being used now. The day passed, PC went to sleep for 7 hours, woke it up and it was lagging, and then it froze and crashed, forcing me to hard reset. I noticed that the audio keeps working just fine even after the entire PC freezes and crashes.

I had “Graphics Acceleration” enabled in Brave when this one happened. I will disable it and see if that changes anything tomorrow. I also enabled Dim and Turn Off Screen back on again, I will slowly test each again, disabling one by one, but I don’t have too much faith on these to be honest.

I also thought it was GDM and SDDM conflicting with each other for finding out I installed one that was meant for Plasma 5, not 6, but still, the lag still happens.

While the PC lags, some weird white artifacts appear on the screen along other weird visual glitches and crashes, usually Desktop Effects, Konsole, the Brave window moving weird, etc. The white lines look like these:

One final theory Imma test is, I’ve noticed YouTube playing dirty to fight against adblockers. One I have noticed is how errors pile up quickly in the background while you watch a video with it adblock enabled. For example, I opened and paused a video here, left it open like that for 3 minutes, and this happened:

Screenshot_20251110_141936
Screenshot_20251110_142108

I remember this messing bad with my Laptop’s memory (it keeps going nonstop until the tab is closed; it’s at 1021 errors right now), so, maybe it’s doing something similar with my new PC. I always go to sleep with a YouTube video left paused and open, I will try closing the tab after everything else failed, to see if it’s YouTube. I don’t think this will be it either, because the lag happens sometimes when it goes to sleep for a short time, with or without YouTube open I think. I want to be 100% sure.

Sigh

It just happened again this morning, with both iGPU and Graphics Acceleration in Brave disabled. I woke up after 7hrs, woke it up, but it was fine, however, I went to bed again for 30mins, PC fell asleep and was awaken again after those 30mins, but with the lag present.

Not sure what else to test, this could be the nvidia driver, kernel or OS?

Found this error getting spammed 6 times per second, during the lag or wake up I believe:

I will report it where it’s telling me to.

Update:

I don’t usually like to trust AI, but it led me to this:

"See that last line?

435 MHz, [N/A], P8

That means your GPU’s stuck in P8, which is the lowest bloody power state. It’s basically idling like a half-asleep pensioner, even when the desktop’s trying to render. That’s exactly why KWin keeps whining about “main thread hanging temporarily” — the compositor’s waiting on a GPU that refuses to wake the hell up."

After it told me to run nvidia-smi --query-gpu=clocks.current.graphics,clocks.applications.graphics,pstate --format=csv while the PC was lagging.

It told me to run these, which I trusted because I did a quick google search to confirm what the parameters do:

sudo nvidia-smi -pm 1
sudo nvidia-smi -lgc 2100,2700

If I understand, P0 - P8 are power modes for the GPU, P0 - P2 being full throttle, for gaming/rendering, and P5+ for being idle, or asleep (P8). My GPU would stay in P8 after waking up, at random. The command woke it up (I think it also capped my MHz at 2700 instead of the Max 3090, but I fixed that and still the same); it feels snappier, does not lag when moving the cursor anymore, but it still lags when opening or closing apps like Konsole, browser tabs, etc, even when CPU/GPU usage stays below 5%, same for I/O R/W stuff. It still hasn’t froze, spawned white blurry lines and crashed, it seems it isn’t going to anymore. I rebooted and it got fixed this time, I don’t have to wait for it to crash, I can maybe run the first command (sudo nvidia-smi -pm 1) and reboot whenever it happens, while I see if I can find how to solve the other half of this.

Another update:

While lagging at 100%, it was at P8 - 435MHz. Ran the commands and then it’d show P5 - 2130MHz~, but with lag at 50%. I rebooted and now it shows P0 - 2640 MHz. I’m a little confused, thought P0 was for full gaming/rendering, temperature is at its normal 39C, GPU usage at 0-5%, so, maybe the command is wrong and this whole thing can be fixed by setting it to P0 - 2640 MHz right next time.

Neveremind, I think this is all wrong. Being idle at the desktop should be on P8 with a low MHz like 400. Right now the GPU boosts up to P0 3090MHz when rendering something just fine, so. The commands did partially fix the issue, I will try just the persistence mode (sudo nvidia-smi -pm 1) one next time, it was maybe the caps I already removed by resetting them to their default values.

TL;DR:

Probable temporary solution for now: sudo nvidia-smi -pm 1 while it’s lagging, and reboot if opening/closing apps or browser tabs still lags the PC. Don’t have to wait for it to crash anymore for now, will keep testing.

Nvm, nothing worked, it still lagged again. I am out of options. There’s also a weird bug now where everything in my browser is treated like text-edit mode, I can put my blinking caret anywhere I want like buttons, text that shouldn’t be edited, or a new page’s background, it’s so weird and persistent. AI says it is because of Kwin’s event loop getting delayed, desync, the UI thinks it’s in “text-edit mode” globally, but I don’t know anymore, I think I will have to boot into a different distro and see if this happens there too.

Have you looked in your bios? This sounds like a BIOS issue with settings, as I had similar issues, and from it happening on GNOME and KDE, I would lean more towards that.

I would set Integrated Graphics / iGPUEnabled or Auto
set your primary display to Auto or IGFX (NOT PCIe)
I’d make sure CSM is disabled.
and absolutely turn off Fast Boot so set it to Disabled.

I reenabled the iGPU and saw UEFI selected instead of CSM. Couldn’t find anything about the primary display or Fast Boot anywhere in this MSI X670E motherboard. After I did that, though, I gave Kubuntu a shot, I installed it in a partition and booted it up to test this issue. It’s worse. The first time I let it sleep by itself, after 15 minutes, I woke it up and it was frozen like this:

After rebooting, I clicked “Sleep” to test it again in the moment, I woke it up and both screens were black, the cursor was visible, but wouldn’t move at all. I said nah, dawg, I guess I’m disabling sleep/suspend. The electric bill and planet Earth can wait.

Ok, actual last try: while checking options in my BIOS, I saw one that said something about waking up being handled by either BIOS or the OS I think, it was set on BIOS, I will test OS… Didn’t fix it, but I discovered that I can suspend it while its lagging instead of waiting for it to crash and then rebooting to get it back to normal, which is a much better temporal alternative.

I have the sleep turned off as well; I just have the machine turn off completely after 2 hours of idle. The electric bill will fluctuate maybe by 10 bucks, if that, if it was on all the time.

The only thing I can think of is to just do a full-blown reinstall. But I’d make sure your BIOS settings are all set correctly. If you came from Windows and you have Windows still installed on a drive, that caused me to never be able to get booted into a live boot, the same with my audio card.

Before going too drastic, though, I would do a live boot with Fedora and see if your problems persist. The other thing I thought of as I was writing was that if you had auto updates enabled and then it did not complete them, you would have incomplete files that are messing with it. Yesterday I spent the whole day troubleshooting for a similar thing, as Plasma would not boot into the user environment, and I found out it’s because I did the install from Discover, and then while I was waiting for files to transfer to my server, I ran sudo dnf upgrade in the terminal and downloaded some files that I guess got updated in the meantime and messed my entire KDE up because I started poking and changing settings, thinking it was one thing and then another. So yeah, I’d try to do a live boot, though, and if you get issues, I’d look into your power wire to the 5080, as I have heard they never fixed the plug issue from the 40 series cards. And with the spiking in power and such, I wonder if it is fried.

Ever since I discovered this, my PC has been waking up normally for a week non-stop every morning, multiple times during the day, etc.

After a week or so passed, it woke up laggy again. I don’t remember if I managed to suspend it myself and it didn’t work (forcing me to wait until it crashed the PC to do a hard reset), or if it crashed too quickly to allow me to suspend it. Either way, I remember the lag needing two hard reboots, like starting an old lawnmower.

Anyway, I took advantage after that to install the updates that accumulated during the week, rebooted, then used the PC until the lag appeared again. When it did, I suspended it instead of waiting it to crash. That fixed the lag again and it’s been days with the PC working as it should.

Shall the lag reappear, and suspending it myself doesn’t fix it, I will let it crash, reboot and repeat until the lag is gone, apply updates and continue. I think this is the best “temporal” fix there is.
