So ive been trying to overclock my display but for some reason it never works. the closest ive gotten is this video : Reddit - Dive into anything
i have an AMD card
i KNOW my monitor can be overclock by this amount since it both works on windows and arch, lowering the overclock does nothing
this effect you see happens the moment fedora starts loading even when the overclock is not selected in the settings, it stops when i get to the login-menu
Does anybody have any idea if this is even possible and how to fix it?
Personally i think i would stick with the 60hz refresh rate, it’s a nice clean standard rate that will sync well in most scenarios (video, games etc). The 80hz option will probably not give you a smoother experience since it is non-standard.
If you are going to watch a video or movie for example then 60hz works well:
24fps movie → 2.5x = 60
30fps movie → 2x = 60
60fps movie → 1x = 60
With 80hz you lose that sync:
24fps movie → 3.333… ~ 80
30fps movie → 2.666… ~ 80
60fps movie → 1.333… ~ 80
So it may look less smooth in practice even though the refresh rate is a bit higher.
Well I’ve been running 80hz on my crappy 27 inch benq for atleast 2 years now and I’ve no issues on Windows, i mainly want this bc it feels horrible to me to play games at 60hz. i truly wanna fully transition from windows to linux and gaming (abit) smoother is definitely a big part of that. I can definitely feel a significant differences when gaming at 60hz vs overclocked at 80hz. It’s not ideal but it beats paying 200 euro to buy myself a 27 inch gaming monitor.

You mentioned it worked well for you on Arch, perhaps that could provide some clues to what could be different? Did you also run Gnome there or a different DE/WM?
Well i did it on a base install of endeavorOS so basically just arch, i think it was on KDE and i just did it via Xrandr, but that doesn’t work on Wayland apparently
Yes Wayland could make it more tricky than regular Xorg. On the video it looks like the refresh rate selected by Gnome is slightly off, causing the display to go out of sync. Perhaps the suggestions in the article below could give you some additional options to test or if needed add refresh rates that are supported by your card:
I don’t understand what you mean by additional options but that site is one of the tutorials I’ve followed to get this result. Everything I’ve tried usually gives me no results or it gives me the weird glitch.
Generally the term overclocking is used for increasing the voltage of the GPU, so this is a slightly different scenario.
If the 80hz refresh rate is not an officially supported rate of the monitor, then it might take a bit of trial and error to find a frequency that works well under Wayland. Perhaps there are other close frequencies like 75hz that are supported. It could help to check in the manual of the monitor (if you have that) for the exact supported rates, but maybe you have done that already.
yeah i was just fucking around with wlr-randr and i can overclock up to 73HZ until it start spacing again, idk why tho. on windows i can go over 80 and on Arch it wasnt a problem either. hopefully i’ll figure it out
