Nvidia releases open kernel modules

What does the release of these open modules mean for us nvidia users?

Is this something that gets integrated into the kernel, or will something like akmod-nvidia just eventually be updated using the open source code? Not really sure how this stuff works.

That’s cool, but sadly it’s only one driver and it will only support the latest hardware. It would inspire more confidence if they released all of their older and legacy drivers as free software instead of asking me to go out and buy something new. It’s been such a pain to be an Nvidia user. I gave up on games because my Nvidia driver didn’t play nice with wayland.

This is pessimistic, but something tells me they needed to give access to the code to some company in order to get a deal to ship Nvidia GPUs. They probably figured it might as well be open-source at that point.
