Hi. I‘m on F41 Kde Plasma.
Since the last update my system ceases to be functional. It starts ok, Discover says it’s up to date. I close it and I see a desktop, but no response to anything - ok, after 10 minutes (literally) a window with something opens that I might have clicked.
When I had this last time, I switched from Wayland to X11, which did help. Now: No effect. Screen is non-responsive. Even switching off is not possible.
This sucks.
At some point I saw an error blinking that there is problem with Plasma. But it disappeared quickly.
Hmm? Nobody else has this issue?
When I start in Gnome, that is without Plama, the machine works fine. So it is a Plasma issue? How can I repair/update Plasma?
Patience
This is a forum and in 2 hours it seems unlikely that everyone here may have even seen your post.
I am not using KDE so cannot assist, but I do read new threads.
Try booting to an older kernel and see if that might work better. It would help to narrow down the cause.
I never use the software manager but instead use dnf for my updates so I can see the text messages on screen and take appropriate action if there is a problem revealed.
Thanks. Of course I understand that I should wait. But not having va working system when I need to do some work is unnerving.
I did try to back one kernel. That didn’t make a difference. That’s why I ask myself if it’s a Plama update that went wrong.
I agree that using Discover for the automatic updates is not great. Many updates mess up the system. But I found no way to switch it off. It keeps starting as first app when I log into my machine.
With gnome the automatic updates can be disabled within the gnome software manager. Possibly similar with discover. Gnome asks the user before actually doing the update.
Or there are a bunch of people with the same issue and unable to use the forum.
Do you reboot to get to Gnome?
Using Gnome you can try running journalctl --no-hostname. -b <N>
in a terminal, where <N>=-1
for the previous boot. Scroll down and look for errors. There are lots of “filter” options that can help isolate detains relevant to a particular issue, but it may take some effort to find the right filters. I often use -p <priority>
and -g <string>
. man journalctl
explains the options.
So am I and it works fine. I just ran another check with dnf upgrade --refresh
, I am on the latest released packages.
Why does Discover autostart on your system and report that there are no updates? Did you set that up? My system does not do that.
Because your system seems to have a non-default login behavior, I suspect a problem with your KDE Plasma configuration. Can you try a new user with an empty home directory and see if this user has the same issues?
Thanks. I did a number of restarts with different kernels. Then I deleted Discover because that always took ages to check for updates when I started. And restarted. And … everything seems fine, in Wayland and X11. With the latest Kernel.
For managing software I will use other solutions, like Gnome software manager or DNF Agora. They work better for me anyway.
So I think at the moment I can say: Problem has gone away (I didn’t really solve it…).
Thanks for your hints!
It may have been set up to autostart when logging in.
Check in ~/.config/autostart to see if you may have put discover in there for automatically starting when you log in.
