Sometimes after waking up my laptop from suspend the fan starts to blow hard and makes noise. That happens as well when I take some time to enter the passphrase to decrypt the hard drive.
That stops when I suspend the laptop again and wake it up but that not always works.

First thing i would do, independent of your software, have a look if the fan and the openings, bringing air to the fan, are free of dust. If you live on a humid place this dust gets sticky and causes quite fast airflow problems.
