The workaround, in case anyone else runs into this, is to change the VM video config from ‘Default Settings’ to ‘Custom Settings.’

It didn’t work for me. However, enabling 3D support in 3D Graphics allowed me to start the virtual machine.

That sounds about right. I clicked that checkbox just as a confirmation that I’d changed the settings to “custom,” but I guess enabling 3D support maybe required as well. Thanks for clarifying!
