If you're using Silverblue/Kinoite, what packages do you layer?

I’m just curious. If you use Silverblue or Kinoite, what packages do you prefer to layer?

Hello @hyperreal ,
If you search you will find a few discussions here about this very topic, like https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/what-are-your-layered-packages/38743.
Right now, on my Silverblue powered laptop I have Vim, Vim-enhanced, and Vim-syntastic because I don’t like nano at all for my default editor. I have Kitty terminal, and Fish shell, because kitty likes her fish. And fzf, exa, bat, tldr, virt-manager/virtualization.

clamtk* fail2ban tlp R rstudio btfs unrar stacer ffmpegthumbs waydroid

somehow most of them dont want to install, weird

I’ve got quite a few layered packages on my Kinoite install.

  • Nvidia driver with cuda, alacritty, android-tools, bismuth, distrobox,
    intel-media-driver, inxi, iotop, kdeconnectd, kernel-tools,
    kffmpegthumbnailer, libavcodec-freeworld, libreoffice, libva-utils,
    libva-vdpau-driver, lxc, mscore-fonts-all, neofetch, nmap,
    pipenv, pmbootstrap, powertop, snapper,
    python3-GitPython, python3-pip, python3-tqdm, qemu, qemu-user-static,
    vdpauinfo, virt-manager, wl-copy, zsh

Libreoffice (unfortunately for me) uses only the GTK runtime in flatpak, which breaks consistency in a kde system. Android-tools, iotop, powertop and nmap need sudo to run properly, so yeah. I want max performance from my graphics hardware, so the drivers, codecs and stuff are needed. I’ll try to get rid of the python3 packages haha, maybe install them via pip instead.

imo, kdeconnectd should be part of the base image.

Only thing I layer is gnome boxes because the flatpak version doesn’t allow sharing of usb devices. Everything else is installed as a flatpak, haven’t found any need to layer anything yet.

Ayy, I see kdeconnectd is now part of the base Kinoite image. I’m elated

Weird, for me the KDE Connect frontend app still crashes for me. I am
using the Flatpak app, while “kde-connect” as RPM is already installed.

Do you mean this flatpak? I can’t find any other kdeconnect-ish flatpak. It’s four years old, and probably abandoned.

I now have no kdeconnect packages layered, or installed as flatpak, but kdeconnect works fine on the system. So I think you’ll be fine if you do the same.

I uninstalled that Flatpak and updated my system. I will see, the Appstarter is still there. I see KDE connect is a submenu, disabled the firewall block and use a VPN on the same server with local sharing enabled, still not showing up…

Yea I have that issue on some networks as well. Depends on the router settings, I guess. Some routers, particularly on public networks, don’t let clients on the same network talk to eachother.

RIght now these are my layered and removed packages:

  RemovedBasePackages: firefox firefox-langpacks 108.0.1-3.fc37
      LayeredPackages: fedora-workstation-repositories fira-code-fonts gdb ksshaskpass podman-compose
                       simple-scan skanlite vim virt-manager

I use the firefox flatpak instead of the packaged version. ksshaskpass is useful when connecting to several machines via ssh. Virtualization and scanning tools just work better when layers; I did attempt to toolbox the latter but it didn’t work great.

GNOME simplescan now has a flatpak! skanlite has it too. Are they working?

Neovim, Distrobox, Zsh.
(I use a custom image provided by u-blue for Nvidia)
EDIT: probably some more, but I can’t remember.

Really want to try this one. It’s one of the missing pieces from Silverblue.

I only layer some fcitx5 related packages and ZSH. All other applications will be installed from flatpak. Also switched to flathub version of firefox, in that way I don’t need to layer some media related packages to make hwdecode working.

Dev env is in toolbox with this script to work with vscode from flatpak.
