According to this Proton Drive roadmap, there is no official Linux app yet.
Rclone tried to create a backend for it, but apparently it has issues. On my installed rclone v1.67.0
I don’t even have the option for Proton Drive.
This is very disappointing from Proton. I wouldn’t have thought so from them, because the macOS app is even Open Source. That’s very sad, I would have expected more from Proton.
I am migrating from macOS to Silverblue, hence my many questions
From what I have read, Proton can be considered an open-source company, but their approach to privacy and encryption means they are not using industry standards (valid both for email and for drive).
While I am also using macOS and Apple’s cloud services, for Fedora I have specifically searched for and am using a cloud provider which, besides being open-source, also uses standard protocols (IMAP/SMTP for email, WebDAV for drive etc).
But I understand the appeal towards Proton’s offerings.
Yes I get why they prefer to do stuff more nonstandard and quicker.
Nextcloud on the other hand works well. Cryptomator too, it uses fuse.
So combining both you have private nextcloud. But no sharing or usable web UI
Full disclosure… I’m not sure if these apply to silverblue, but here’s how I was using proton via rclone on standard fedora.
If you follow the installation instructions for the beta version on this page: Rclone downloads
You can then follow the instructions located here: Proton Drive Setup
I’ve used rclone with proton drive and it seems to work fine. However I’ve not kept up in usage with it so I don’t know if there’s any quirks to it. As others have alluded to above, the proton drive protocols are all undocumented; so the integration is done purely off of observed calls and could change at any moment. I believe that’s why it’s probably not going to come out of the beta release any time soon.
It’s certainly disappointing that they don’t seem to have linux on their roadmaps. But it is what it is I suppose.
if you use rclone
with Proton Drive your files are encrypted on 2 layers and you can’t view/browse your files with the Proton Drive Android app?
There is no reason to use Proton Drive, I would recommend the cheaper S3. Meanwhile there are many providers, not only Amazon (AWS).
Be very careful with Cryptomator. The software is written in Java. Java SDK or even JDK on your computer means a huge security risk. I would stay away from Java, it’s more for companies and their app servers.
No thanks, to Java code.
I’m not sure if that’s a question or statement? There’s no issues in accessing the files from either as far as I’m aware. Did you read somewhere else that this isn’t the case?
As for the reason(s) to use it. There’s plenty of reasons to use proton drive, but that’s entirely up to the individual use case. I was avoiding other suggestions as that was outside the original question posed. Pricing as you’ve mentioned with AWS is highly dependent on the usage patterns.
