Gnome not working with nouveau driver

Hi all,

I’m not able to use a GNOME login session when using nouveau drivers. gdm loads fine, but as soon as I type my password, the screen freezes with a gray background and a frozen mouse cursor. I can’t switch to virtual consoles, but I can use the SysRq keys. I’m pasting below what looks like the relevant parts of my logs. I’m not finding much info about “INJECTED_BUNDLE_ERROR”. (There are a lot of normal-looking gnome-shell messages in the logs after what I’m pasting below, as if gnome doesn’t know it’s not in a usuable state.)

This started in the last few days, possibly after dnf upgrades on the 18th, which included a bunch of firmware updates (including gpu firmware) and mesa stuff.

Any pointers for me?

(I have the nvidia drivers installed from rpmfusion, but at the moment there’s a bug waking from sleep with an external monitor, which is a separate problem that I’m hoping will go away with the next nvidia driver update. That’s why I’m trying to use nouveau.)

Thanks for any hints!

This happened to me too today, but with AMD video card, so unlikely nouveau is causing this.
I moved all extensions from .local/share/gnome-shell/extensions to other temporary location and after that i was able to log in normally. Then moved extensions one by one back to original place until it happened again. For me faulty extension was - “Nothing to say”

Glad your trouble shooting was able to identify the cause. Hopefully @amcbride may be able to do the same.

I’m afraid that didn’t work for me… I only have one extension, and neither disabling it nor moving it had any effect. Thank you for the suggestion though, and I’m glad your gnome login is working normally again.

I’m having the same problem with Fedora 39 with the 6.6.x kernels, I have a Dell Inspiron 5593 with an Intel igpu and a Nvidia MX230. I try to login and I type my password, when I press enter Fedora freezes on the gray login screen. After a while it returns to the login screen, then I go to tty3 and type “sudo systemctl restart gdm”, it takes me to the login screen but this time it works and with the nouveau too. If I don’t want to have problems I have to boot the 6.5.12 or to blacklist the nouveau in the grub command. I hope you undesrtand my english.

Please provide the output from running inxi -Fzxx in a terminal (as text using the </> button). This will tell us you hardware configuration and drivers used.

You can use journalctl in a terminal to examine logs for the current or previous boots. Linux captures enormous detail, so there an art to filtering journalctl output and there are many command-line options to filter output. The ones I use the most (read about them in man journalctl) are -b N (boot number), -p N (show priority 1-N messages), and -g <pattern> (grep for <pattern>. Once you have a way to select entries relevant to a problem, you can either use a very wide terminal or redirect output to a file (which you can edit before pasting into a forum post).

This is the “inxi -Fzxx” output:

I hope I did it in the right way.

There are many multiple graphics configurations. You have Intel “Iris Plus”, which is designed to enable the Nvidia dGPU “on demand” to save power and prolong battery runtime. You may find the issue goes away using the Nvidia drivers from RPMfusion.

Display: wayland server: X.org v: 1.20.14 with: Xwayland v: 23.2.4
    compositor: gnome-shell-driver: X: loaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa gpu: i915
    display-ID: 0

You only provide 57 the thousands of lines journalctl can provide. There should be entries related to the initial failure of gdm. Please try to remove irrelevant lines. Try journalctl -b -p 4 to list high priority messages and select any related to graphics. You may get lots of ACPI errors which are usually “harmless”. Try journalctl -b -g nvidia, journalctl -b -g gdm, and journalctl -b -g i915.

Ok thanks, I’m going to try:
journalctl -b -p 4:

Skimming through journalctl -b -p 4 These things stuck out to me :

dbus-org.freedesktop.home1.service Not Found:
org.freedesktop.systemd1 Service Failed:

From journalctl -b -g nvidia It looks like there was an attempt to install the driver from RPMFusion but failed. The system is running on nouveau driver.

nouveau 0000:01:00.0: NVIDIA GP108 (138000a1)

You can do dnf list installed | grep nvidia to see what is/not installed, if not you will need to retry the install.

You may also need to verify that secure boot is not enabled before the nvidia drivers will load.
That is done with the command mokutil --sb-state or by using dmesg | grep -i secure

Yes, I installed them but when booting Fedora says “Kernel module missing. Falling back to nouveau” causing the same problem. I could install nvidia drivers again disabling the secure boot but if I want to use the nouveau drivers is there a solution?

If you have previously had the nvidia drivers installed you can check if akmods is still installed with dnf list installed akmods. If akmods is not already installed then I suggest installing it, followed by a reboot before continuing. dnf install akmods

Once akmods is installed then you can follow the instructions in the file
/usr/share/doc/akmods/README.secureboot to create and enroll a signing key into bios.
Once the key is enrolled into bios then install the nvidia drivers from rpmfusion and the driver module will be signed when it is created.

After the signed module is created and the key has been enrolled into bios then the driver can be loaded with secure boot enabled.

There are several threads about this.

Using nouveau after the nvidia drivers are installed is quite possible. See special instructions #3
at Howto/NVIDIA - RPM Fusion.

The instructions for secure boot are also there under the howto tab at the top of the page.

The output of “dnf list installed | grep nvidia” is:

nvidia-gpu-firmware.noarch 20231211-1.fc39 @updates

The output of “dnf list installed akmods” says that there aren’t corrispondet packages. I’ll try to reinstall nvidia rpm drivers in the next days, I’ll keep you updated, thanks for the support.

Ok, so the nvidia drivers are not installed and akmods is also not installed. I suggest that you install akmods first then perform the steps indicated to create and import the key into the bios before you install the nvidia drivers…

Please read A [December 2023] Nouveau graphics driver update and NVK Vulkan Performance to understand the current predicament with open source Nvidia drivers.

You should give Nvidia drivers a proper test, and hope the 6.7 kernel delivers better open source drivers.

I’m currently on the 6.7.4 kernel and I’m having the same issues. So I’ll go for the nvidia drivers.

@computersavvy and @gnwiii I’ve just installed the nvidia drivers following the steps you recommended and it seems to work. Thanks a lot!

I have a laptop with, apparently, hybrid Intel (Kabylake UHD Graphics 620) and nVidia (NV138) graphics here. I also started observing this issue on Fedora 39 near the end of 2023, and it persists after upgrading that laptop to Fedora 40. I’ve only tested the Wayland version of GNOME, with Nouveau.

The issue happens even if I dnf remove xorg-x11-drv-nouveau nvidia-gpu-firmware and delete the ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/ folder.

The thing is, this seems to be caused by the Linux kernel. Versions 6.7.x and 6.8.x are where this bug happens (maybe 6.6.x too, but I had never installed that version so I can’t tell whether it would be affected). I still have the 6.5.5 version of Linux installed there, that I have secured in place with dnf versionlock, and it works 100% fine with kernel 6.5.5. If I try to use one of those more recent kernels, the kernel will panic and the system will hard lock-up as soon as you login past GDM (the boot process and overall system responsiveness is also much slower).

Just sharing this observation here in case it might help someone else figure out what the issue might be, and if there is an existing bug report upstream about a known issue in Linux or Mesa/Nouveau…
