Nouveau Panic: random Wayland + X11 crashes

Upgraded to fedora 40 (Plasma) yesterday but the update had a few issues, so I decided to reinstall fedora, Gnome, this time.

So here’s the issue: the desktop + mouse sometimes just randomly freeze after a couple minutes (on Wayland AND X11) and the system basically locks up completely.
Reading the journal from one of the freezes (full version available HERE) shows me a lot of errors a la

I noticed that these nouveau crashes appear more frequent when having gnome extensions enabled and / or interacting with GTK native elements.

(btw I’m also getting notifications about gjs and tracker-miners crashing directly after login??)

My graphics card is a NVIDIA Quadro FX880M, running on a Fujitsu Celsius H700.

Any ideas for fixes?

I suggest installing the appropriate nvidia driver for that GPU.

That is an extremely old GPU and from the nvidia site appears to only be supported by the nvidia 340xx driver (possibly the 390xx driver). If using the nvidia driver it does not support wayland so X11 would be your only choice. The nvidia driver may or may not work with current kernels so you may be stuck with what the nouveau driver can do for you on that old card.

Nvida has not supported that card for more than five years.

Tried building it with the .run from their website but it failed…
Guess I will either have to switch distros (in the hopes of not running into the same issue) or go back to windows (at least the drivers worked there… yikes.)

Where is the right place to submit a bug report to nouveau? So it might get fixed at some point?
Or should I report it at the fedora bug tracker?

hello
I upgraded last days , and now after rebooting my server stop completly after less than 15 minutes.
probably the same problem ; but not at home for testing now.

I’m also seeing this crash/lockup. I’ve filed a nouveau ticket about it if anyone wants to follow along and help as necessary.

I did open a Fedora Bugzilla ticket about this a while ago but it’s only getting crickets. Sadly. That avenue seems to be a waste of time.

Try this: nvidia - Problem with nouveau driver and Ubuntu 24.04 - Ask Ubuntu

This helped me, no glitches and crashes so far. I have also FX 880M.
