Latest 6.2 kernel prevent gdm session to start

Dear fellow,

I’m stuck on kernel 6.1.18-200.fc37.x86_64, because with any 6.2 kernel I tried, my graphical session does not start.

If anyone has some idea and could point me in the right direction,
I would appreciate…

here are some excerpts of journald output for with my last boot attempt with kernel 6.2.9 (kernel 6.2.7 gave the same result):
If I try to compared the boot logs to only put relevant errors,
and it seems to be related with the nouveau driver and my mvidia card :-/

I had the same problem.

Probably you have a Nvidia GPU?
Installing the drivers from RPMfusion described as here:
RPM fusion NVIDIA solved the problem for me at least.

Especially pay attention to the exclamation marks while install the drivers.

Please remember to wait after the RPM transaction ends, until the kmod get built. This can take up to 5 minutes on some systems.

Do not forget after every update, you have to give time to build the new kernel modules.

If we knew how you installed the nvidia drivers we would be able to help alot better. As has already been posted rpmfusion is the recommended way in Fedora.

I am not using the proprietary driver from Nvidia. I’m using the nouveau driver.

But since the kernel 6.2 it does not work anymore.

Please remember that the nouveau driver is open source and reverse engineered in an attempt to support the nvidia cards. As such it does not provide 100% support and does not support hardware acceleration on the GPU at all. It lags behind the hardware releases quite some time, especially with the newer cards.

Kernel advances and hardware advances lead the nouveau drivers by quite some time so if you expect perfection – don’t !!.

The proprietary drivers usually give much better support and quicker for the nvidia GPUs.

Installing the nvidia drivers from rpmfusion will likely solve the issue with gdm and the 6.2 kernels.

As @computersavvy mentioned there will be a time gap in between a smooth functioning driver on new kernels. So if you want a fallback you could try the LTS kernel and see if this is a alternative for a fallback if there are hick ups because of new kernels.

Here, pmu is power management.

Use modinfo nouveau | grep tu117 to generate a list of the firmware files required for your card and check that the files are present in /lib/firmware.

and I checked that the nvidia-gpu-firmware-20230310-148.fc37.noarch RPM is correctly installed
RPM does not report any changed or missing files

I will try to reboot in one of the 6.2 kernel and see if I see a diff

By curiosity, I tested the Fedora 38 Live ISO, and it freezes just after starting the gdm.service

open-gpu-kernel-modules PMU Firmware #227 has:

we need PMU firmware officially released by nvidia with a license that allows nouveau to use it, signed ofc

There may be a way for individuals to extract PMU firmware from Nvidia’s drivers, or maybe the pmu firmware requirement was created in anticipation of Nvidia releasing firmware.

Phoronix 2020 NVIDIA TU117 TU116 Firmware:

These latest NVIDIA signed firmware drops also don’t cover the PMU firmware, which means that the Nouveau performance will continue to be piss poor due to being stuck at boot clock frequencies rather than the rated GPU/vRAM frequencies. Until this gets sorted out, the GeForce GTX 900 series and later performance off the Nouveau open-source driver is extremely limited.

Have you tried the nvidia drivers from rpmfusion?

Yes, I’m just trying it.
I can now boot with the latest kernel version.

But out of the box support from fedora would be better imho…
