Gnome: Activities View doesn't stick

I have been using fedora 40 workstation for 3 months now and this has been an issue for me since the beginning. When I press super key and open Activities View, it should be opened and sometimes it does stay open. But most of the times, it opens and closes again within less 3 seconds. I am not able to replicate, meaning I don’t know the cause.

Added desktop, f40

  1. The issue was before I enabled extensions. Still I disabled extensions, this didn’t solve.
  2. I used journalctl -xe and it seems helpful for someone who knows their stuff. Attached are 2 screenshots. Later one is after the bug.

If you need logs, tell me.
  3. I was able to somewhat replicate the issue. Here it goes. i) open activities drawer by super key or 3 finger up swipe. ii) give entropy by just moving the mouse cursor (touchpad in my case). iii) voila, activities view is closed!!!

Hi. It is always best to post logs as preformatted text (using the </> button) instead of screenshots.

Given that you’re using a touchpad, could it be that it is highly sensitive to touchpad presses (or to sigle touches), actions which would rightfully trigger closing the Activities view?

You could test if there is difference when using the mouse.

I don’t have a mouse surprisingly, but I did test it by turning off the touchpad from gnome settings and, in my words, creating entropy by super key and then shifting workspaces while staying in activities view.

Here are the logs with touchpad disabled.

I also tested it with new user ‘test’ and checked if its a user level problem. It is global. Maybe global software is causing this issue. hmm.
Here are the logs btw (with touchpad). This one is big. Also, with a stack trace.

EDIT: Issue still persists. Keep an eye on new comments.

The issue is very likely with the Nouveau nvidia driver. Try swapping it with akmod-nvidia driver or official nvidia driver (not recommended Latest Production Branch → Additional information). Read this post and this comment to solve.

I am very sorry but issue still persists. Sorry for my over excitement. Any help is still welcomed.

To somewhat isolate the issue, could you test with the touchpad connection physically removed (i.e. not from GNOME Settings), but unplugged if it is wired, or turned off it is wireless.

Please also post here as well the output of inxi -Fzxx.

I’ve had this happen one time about a day or two ago. I think it was related to the Hide Top Bar extension but not certain (I used that ext for years no issue). Activities would appear and quickly disappear/back to the focused window or desktop.

Intel UHD 630, Wayland, F40. I had a CORSAIR USB mouse connected like normal and touchpad presumably disabled with gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.touchpad send-events disabled-on-external-mouse.

Disconnecting touchpad isn’t feasible in this laptop, I guess. I do not own this device. Also, the touchpad works perfectly fine with Windows 11 that I have dual booted.

Two more thing I would like to point out.

  1. When I take screenshots, the same thing happens. By the time I adjust my area selection, it disappears – back to normal mode. I guess the issue is with displaying overlays.
  2. Ever since I switched to the new nvidia proprietary driver from nouveau yesterday, the issue has been tough to reproduce, and triggers ‘even more’ unexpectedly. Frequency is 30% less, although, my sample size (one day) isn’t nearly as credible.
  • I started with disabling all the extensions. Didn’t work.
  • I wanted to test it with a mouse too. I don’t have a mouse though, funnily enough. Still, I disabled touchpad from gnome settings and was able to replicate the issue with keyboard only. Also, after switching to akmod-nvidia drivers, I’m seeing that the issue is less frequent.

How did you disable touchpad from GNOME Settings? On my system I can only enable/disable it in gsettings (or in dconf editor), but I am using a virtualized Fedora ATM, so the setting might be missing because of the emulation.

A mouse would be useful, just for reproducing the issue.
