Fedora Silverblue 41 random freezing

hi, I recently switched to Fedora Silverblue, Gnome edition.
however it started to freeze out of nowhere and I don’t know what it could be.

Can someone please help me or give me some tips?

I tried to change the power plan to balanced, I turned off XMP ram profile, I turned off extensions and it still does it…

Hi and welcome to :fedora: .

Is the issue reproducible with the previous deployment, or is it only the last one, with kernel 6.12.6, that has freezing issues?

Can you post the output of rpm-ostree status?

Its been doing this since i installed it for the first time, it happens mostly while browsing.

When it freezes does it eventually come back or do you have to reboot your system? What did you use before Fedora Silverblue which didn’t have a freezing issue? Also you might be able to find something useful in GNOME Logs after a freeze.

Before Fedora ive been using Arch and before that Mint.
Mint doesnt have these problems, but Arch got the same hickups like Fedora now.
It worked great 5 months, but then it started doing these freezes, so i switched to Fedora in hope it will be fine.
Whole GUI is not responding, when im playing a videos online, the sound continues, i can pause the video via keyboard shortcut, but nothing else is happening, i must hard reset the PC.
Where can i find GNOME Logs please, thanks.

Which indicates that this is an issue in a current software update. Kernel, mesa, whatever

I was thinking of the same thing.

@connla , when did you install Siverblue 41? I wonder if the issue came with the 6.12 kernels. Being on an atomic desktop, you could roll back to a previous deployment, other than the one still on your system. I couldn’t tell though which is the last server-side image containing the 6.11 kernels.

Other than that, you could have a look at some other topics here in the forums, discussing about issues noticed in recent months with AMD GPUs (not related to atomic desktops in particular).

So today i updated and so far, no freezing.
Im not sure if its fixed or not tho, ive browsing internet, multitasking and no freeze at all…

Nope, still not fixed :frowning:

Press the super key (often the Windows logo for converted laptops) and just type the word “logs” without the quotation marks. It should be the only application which comes up unless you installed another logging application.

You can filter by time up top and by message type on the left side. There may be a clue as to why there is a crash.

What browser are you using? Is it always while playing video or a specific task, or random?

I have been having similar issues with Fedora silverblue, and I think this issue may be the cause in my case, but perhaps not the same for user Bo Bo.

  • amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: amdgpu: SECUREDISPLAY: query securedisplay TA failed. ret 0x0
  • amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: amdgpu: Secure display: Generic Failure.

I am not computer savvy, but I figured I mine as well post this here, in case it helps others, or with this specific case.

@jjytomatoxjj open up GNOME Logs and search for ‘firmware’. Let us know if there are any logs regarding missing firmware. I found your SECUREDISPLAY log elsewhere and it was resolved by manually copying in the missing firmware to /lib/firmware/amdgpu/

I looked up firmware, and the only thing I found that might be similar was this:

  • ACPI: [Firmware Bug]: BIOS _OSI(Linux) query ignored

BTW, I updated to Fedora Linux 41.20241227.0 (Silverblue) / with kernel: Linux 6.12.6-200.fc41.x86_64, and the crashes have stopped so far, and I will report back whether or not it continues into the future

So I am hoping that the update fixed the error somehow

I also noticed the previous error could happen without the brave browser open, but seemed more likely to crash if I left a video running on Brave

I have had past problems with my computer (running poorly for video applications on other Linux distros) where the problem was solved by updating my graphics software with the official AMDGPU stack on AMD’s website.

I thought I heard that the mesa package/driver was there to replace the amdgpu with open source drivers? And that the mesa drivers were better for most use cases?
Not sure on the validity or history on that, I am trying to remember information offhand.
