Fedora Server 41 Install crashes after choosing the language

So I booted from the iso and after choosing my language the install freezes (i can move my mouse). I’ve tried waiting but nothing happened after 30 minutes.
I can provide more info if anyone needs it
It’s my first time with linux, could anyone help me out?

Which language ?

English (US), it happens with every language

Have you checked the iso before make the usb pen drive?

i think so, i validated it with balena etcher

Did you do the checksum check on the iso using the data from the page where you downloaded that iso?

The fact that you used balena etcher seems to indicate that you may have created the usb on a windows machine. It has become apparent recently that the simple act of plugging the usb into a windows machine after creation results in windows writing something to the device that often results in failure when attempting to install.

Workaround:
Burn the iso to the USB then never reconnect that usb to a window machine that is running. Only connect that device to a machine that is powered off and boot from that usb device!!

looks like the checksum matches, although mine is all caps, will that affect anything?

No, that’s not a problem - a through f in hexadecimal mean the same thing whether they’re in caps or lowercase.

Yes seams to be the auto play function which is writing a ini file on to the pen-drive. Just switch this totally off and try again using the Fedora Media Writer for windows.

Try to reformat the pendrive, when auto-play is deactivated. I never used the Windwos version of Fedora Media Writer. On Linux it has the option to reformat the device before writing the iso on it.

The ascii codes for upper and lower case characters are NOT the same, nor are the hex values.

Some software may interpret them the same, but they are definitely different.

AFAIK the sha256sum values are always displayed in lower case on linux but may be in uppercase on windows.

Correct, but irrelevant. When displaying a hexadecimal representation of a byte string it can use the characters 0123456789abcdef or 0123456789ABCDEF for the values 0 through 15.

The sha256 checksum is displayed as such a hexadecimal representation and can be in lower case or uppercase depending on the program displaying it.

I faced the same exact problem:

I flashed Fedora workstation 41 (I also tried 40, 39 and 41 server) iso to usb stick (I tried different usb sticks as well) with rufus. I boot onto the usb stick, I open the “install fedora” graphical interface, I select the language, but no matter the language I select, as soon as I click on continue, a window pops up saying “install fedora on hard drive is not responding” and the system freezes after a minute, I can only move the mouse, nothing else works.

I have tried booting in UEFI, legacy, tried changing CMS settings, tried resetting secure boot keys, then disabled secure boot, I tried different usb 3.0, usb 2.0 ports on my pc. I even tried the anaconda iso install but the gui would not initialise. I did a memtest86 which reported 0 ram errors. I don’t know what is causing this problem, it really annoys me.

More details: whatever I do in the gnome desktop from the live iso, if I launch any application, the system freezes after a minute or less and I have to restart my computer, exactly the same behaviour as when I click on continue from the install interface.

If that is relevant, here’s some precision on my hardware:

  • 8 GB ram
  • i7 6700
  • gtx 1080
  • Asus motherboard

If any of you may have an explanation I’d be so thankful.

Also: I tried to boot into Ubuntu to check, but I get a bios error like “Error Something has gone seriously wrong: import_mok_state() failed: Volume Full”
I installed also CachyOS running Gnome but same issue, I start an application and it randomly freezes.

This could be a problem with the mass storage device. What is the history of the device? Can you run Gome Disks in the Live Installer? That should let you inspect the storage device, including some testing.

Well I tried with 3 different usb stick with different brand but I will try that if the application does not freeze my computer.

I tried the basic graphics mode, but the same problem occurs

Do you want install fedora on system that already have install windows ?

Yes I have windows 11 on my computer, but tired of using windows and I need Linux for work.

Edit: windows is installed on another disk, I can simply unplug the sata cable if needed. Thought I don’t think having windows installed on another disk will disturb fedora from functioning

That will make it much better than dual boot .Check bios it is set AHCI mode or RAID for sata drives if is set raid change to ahci .Once you change it try to boot windows first to see it will boot like that

I don’t think my bios allows RAID configuration since there aren’t settings for it
