Fedora Magazine / Newsbot

Hi! I manage the Fedora logo queue and received the following message this weekend. I wanted to give you a heads up about this - basically a volunteer, Jimi, is running a newsbot that uses the Fedora Magazine feed and they are looking for avatar and header images for Fedora Magazine for the bot. So a few things:

  • I wanted to let you know that this bot exists.
  • I wanted to run this proposed usage of the Fedora magazine logo by you before I granted permission through the Fedora logo queue.
  • I wanted to ask if you were ok with it, and I created a header image for the account, are there any Fedora Magazine graphics in mind that might work well for using as a base for that?

Anyhow the message is quoted below with permission, let me know what you think.

Hello!
I created a bot to notify when Fedora Magazine has new article and I would like to have avatar logo for it, preferrably Fedora Magazine logo but I think Fedora logo would fit well too.

The bot and placeholders can be seen at https://newsbots.eu/@fedora_magazine

Mastodon avatar is a PNG, GIF or JPG. At most 2 MB. Will be downscaled to 400x400px. Avatar can utilize transparency and default backgroud on website will be #17191f for transparent parts or in client applications the avatar may be shown borderless with rounded corners and the background color may be user defined, by default the color scheme is dark on all platforms. Avatar will be shown both in circle and square with rounded corners.

And then there’s the header image which is preferrably PNG, GIF or JPG. At most 2 MB. Will be downscaled to 1500x500px but it isn’t as necessary as the avatar, but if you happen to have something suitable I would really appreciate that.

I have the ability to somewhat resize and modify the images if necessary

The bot is already running, but the profile can be edited at any time. Also, if the bot is for some reason not allowed, to my understanding it is okay, I can stop and delete it.

Thanks, @duffy! I have no objections to the use here, as the profile makes clear that this is independent of the Fedora Project. Any other editors disagree?

I don’t have any particular suggestions for the header image.

I agree with what Ben said.

So is the following statement (from the linked page) still accurate?:

This bot is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Fedora Project

Definition of endorse:

To give one’s name or support to; to sanction; to aid by approval; to approve; as, to indorse an opinion. [1913 Webster]

Saying it is “not endorsed” sounds (to me) as if the Fedora Project does not approve of the bot. On the contrary, I suspect the Fedora Project is welcoming of a bot that potentially directs traffic toward their content. However, I do not know who has the authority to officially endorse a bot.

This is best thought of as technical language. To not endorse is not the same as to disapprove.

The Fedora Council does. But I don’t think we need to do anything here. It’s fine.
