Fedora 44 Graphical Boot Help

A fresh Fedora 44 installation consistently fails to reach the graphical login screen on my hardware. The operating system itself boots successfully and remains accessible over SSH. Booting to multi-user.target first and later switching to graphical.target reliably starts GNOME every time. A normal/graphical boot always starts to a black screen and nothing I have tried will restore a graphical session from this state.

The Fedora Live installer also required nomodeset before installation.

I’m unsure if this is a known issue. Black screen issues with nvidia seem to be common and I’ve exhausted my google-fu trying to resolve this.

Hardware

  • Fedora 44

  • NVIDIA driver 610.43.03 (RPM Fusion)

Reproduction

  1. Fresh install Fedora 44.

  2. Boot normally.

  3. Screen remains black before GDM.

  4. SSH remains functional.

Workaround

Boot with:

systemd.unit=multi-user.target

Then run:

sudo systemctl isolate graphical.target

The graphical desktop starts successfully.

More Info

  • Fedora Live installer required nomodeset.

  • NVIDIA logs report flip event timeouts.

  • Kernel and userspace remain operational after the display failure.

  • Latest motherboard BIOS installed.

  • PCIe generation, Above 4G, and Resizable BAR changes did not resolve the issue.

try booting with kernel argument plymouth.use-simpledrm=1

You can also opt removing rhgb from the kernel command line.

You say you have the nvidia driver but we need more info.
Please post (as preformatted text with the </> button) the output of inxi -ezxx. It may be necessary to install inxi.

Also show us the output of dnf list --installed \*nvidia\*
and modinfo -l nvidia && modinfo -F version nvidia
as well as sudo dmesg | grep -iE "nvidia|nouveau"

I think this is the 5th MSI+Nvidia “No output” posts I’ve seen this week. I know MSI are relatively common, so maybe I’m seeing a connection where it’s inevitable due to the number of installations out there.

I forgot to include in my initial report that I had tried other kernel command line options. I’ve tried so many things I’ve lost track. None of these worked:

  • Removing rhgb quiet
  • Setting plymouth.enable=0 in addition to the above
  • Adding WaylandEnable=false under [daemon] in /etc/gdm/custom.conf
  • Added a delay to gdm startup with ExecStartPre=/usr/bin/sleep 60

I also neglected to mention I run multiple GPUs normally. I removed everything but a single 3080 in the primary slot and the behaviour is the same. I also tried with HDMI and DisplayPort outputs.

The only thing I can do to reliably get a desktop is boot with systemd.unit=multi-user.target, log in at the terminal probmpt, then run sudo systemctl isolate graphical.target.

You say you’ve removed everything barring one of the nv cards, yet these logs show there are 4 still installed, devices:

Yeah, I decided I can live with the workaround of booting to text mode first, as otherwise everything works fine. Rendering, local AI models, etc all are ok. I put it all back together so I could continue to work.

Fair enough - I figured that would be the case, and I can see that the 3080 is the 2b:00 device and it’s the one which indicates it can see a display attached.

This is a race condition I think - the fact that you can start in a text mode and initiate the GUI from text mode after boot has completed, indicates that the device is ok, the drivers are installed ok and working. I guess if GDM starts up before the 16 seconds it takes to initialise all the devices you’ll get no output…

I see you’ve already slapped a 60 second pause on GDM startup - is there anything weird in a systemd-analyze blame?

Nothing unusual really. I do have a TON of output from other commands from debugging I did via ssh in the “black screen” state but I didn’t want to flood my initial report. If any of these would be helpful I can post, or tarball up all the text file outputs I made. These were all run while I was using SSH to log in when the screen was black:

I wouldn’t mind seeing the entire journalctl output up to the point where the 3080 fully initialised with that message I quote above - that takes around 17 seconds or so in the example output you quoted, which seems like quite a long time to be honest but I don’t have an Nv card to compare against.

Does booting with the parameter nvidia-drm.modeset=1 help at all?

also, my initial post was after I used the text boot workaround. I’m not sure when nvidia is initialised, but if it’s after I initiated the switch to graphical mode that might account for the 17 seconds: the time it took me to log in to the terminal and start up graphical mode.

Out of interest, have you tried connecting the display to the 1st card ( e.g dp-1) .

Maybe adding the nvidia driver to the initramfs could help here.
omit the nouveau driver and add the nvidia drivers instead.

The parameter nvidia-drm.modeset=1 was previously set and should be cleared from current installations. This parameter produces a bad interaction with a Fedora Kernel specific patch to deal with early boot display with simpledrm. To avoid any issue, don’t use nvidia-drm.modeset=1 parameter from cmdline.

I have no idea if that would help or not.

nvidia-drm.modeset=1 did not change anything, unfortunately. While I was in the display blackhole state I tried somethine new. I wanted to see if I could SSH in, take down graphical mode, unload, then reload the nvidia drivers. I couldn’t quite recall how modprobe worked and ended up locked up in terminal 1.

I could try that. I’d have to rearrange things as the only card with accessible ports right now is the card in the primary x16 slot (device-4/card4, the 3080).

I finally got it working. I should have tried one thing at a time so I’m not sure which change resulted in success. I uninstalled the rpmfusion packages and installed the drivers from the official nvidia repo. I also swapped the display port cable for HDMI. I did try swapping back to the DisplayPort for one boot and black-screened again. Switched back to HDMI and boot was clean. Rebooted two more times to make sure.

I forget if this was already somewhere in my diagnostics, but the monitor is a Samsung 34" G5 LC34G55TWWNXZA

I really should have tried one thing at a time, but at least now I have a system I can boot without issues. If there is anything I can provide that would assist further please let me know.

Edited to add: Boot is also successful using DisplayPort if I turn off FreeSync and force 60hz refresh rate in the monitor menu. I also tried with 100hz and black-screened.
