Black screen on boot after Fedora 44 upgrade and nvidia driver reinstall

Hi all,
I’m having an issue after I have upgraded my system from Fedora 43 to 44 and tried to reinstall the Nvidia driver.

The symptom is that after the system starts booting, it prompts for the disk encryption password. After that, it just hangs, either with the boot screen hanging/freezing, or moving over to a black screen. Then it just hangs.

While on Fedora 43, I had the official Nvidia proprietary drivers installed. After the system upgrade, nvidia-smi tool started to show an error saying: NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.

I have uninstalled the proprietary drivers with sudo dnf remove nvidia-driver. After that, I have followed the “Uninstall the NVIDIA driver” and " Recover from NVIDIA installer" parts of the rpmfusion install guide. Then, I have followed the instructions on the Configuration page, then Howto/Secure Boot, then Current GeForce/Quadro/Tesla. Waited for the transaction to finish and kmod to build.

Running modinfo outputs the following:

$ modinfo -l nvidia && modinfo -F version nvidia

I did akmods --rebuild --force, also dracut --force, but with no success.

[Update]: nvidia-smi is able to communicate with the driver now, but it finds no running processes.

I don’t see how you have managed to type those commands.
From a textual login with Ctrl-Alt-F3 ?

That said, try the following:

  • reboot
  • at the grub prompt, edit the linux line:
    • suppress rhgb and quiet
    • add 3 nomodeset

You should normally get only a textual login. Log in and try:

sudo modprobe nvidia
sudo nvidia-smi

if that fails:

sudo journalctl -b --no-hostname | fpaste

then post here the obtained URL for this paste.

I was able to run the mentioned (by me) commands by editing the boot command in grub adding only 3 at the end and logging in.

In the meantime, I have tried what you’ve said and the commands did not fail. Although sudo modprobe nvidia had no output.

That’s good: meaning that the nvidia module has been loaded.
You can verify that with: lsmod | grep nvidia

Now one may suspect that the upgrade to F44 is partial:

  • sudo dnf check should give no output
  • sudo dnf repolist should list Fedora 44 repos, no F43 ones

Can you verify that?

As you mentioned sudo dnf check did not return anything and sudo dnf repolist returned Fedora 44 repos only. Should I post the output here? If so, how can I do that with no GUI?

Which GPU do you have? My first guess is that you may be hitting common issue: Upgrading to Fedora 44 breaks Nvidia driver for older GPUs (GeForce 10xx and older)

But as others have said, we need to see your log to get a better idea of what exactly is happening.

I have Nidia Geforce RTX 2070 Max-Q.
I’m happy to provide any log if once I know how I can do that without providing only screenshots. I would’ve shared much more, but I don’t know how I can do that with no GUI.

To have a proper log in this 3 “runlevel”, try:

  • sudo systemctl start display-manager
  • if it still freezes:
    • try to switch back to the textual login
    • execute from it: sudo journalctl -b --no-hostname | fpaste
    • post here the URL

Unfortunately it freezed, so here’s the output:

Something is wrong:

  • one sees your call of sudo journalctl in this log
  • but no call of sudo systemctl

Can you redo those steps please.

I see. Than I have misunderstood it and should have been able to switch back to textual without system restart. How can I do that? Sorry, I’m still a noob in these.

Ok. Hitting Ctrl-Alt-F1 should have switched you back to the textual login.
No need to do that, because we have a boot with the failure.
If you have rebooted only once after the freeze, do:

  • sudo journalctl -b -1 --no-hostname | fpaste

-1 means the previous boot.

Otherwise:

  • list the boot with: journalctl --list-boots
  • fpaste the proper one with (-2 here as example)
    • sudo journalctl -b -2 --no-hostname | fpaste

I see that the intel gpu (iGPU) does not load the driver.

This could very well be the cause of failure to load the GUI desktop.
