Fedora 43 Beta - Dragging Chromium Window by Tab Crashes Gnome to Login Screen

Given the many layers involved, I thought I’d try here first.

When you open Chromium (or Chrome) and simply drag the window by the tab, not the title bar, it will completely crash Gnome to the login screen.

This doesn’t seem exactly related to issues in the past with dragging Chromium windows to other displays.

I have been able to recreate this on VMM with a completely vanilla install of Fedora 43 Beta

Next step: show a stack trace.

Please see the stacktrace as a "limewire” link as it was too large to put inline - if you would like it through another method, let me know:

I had this issue with Brave also

I see this link doesn’t appear to work, so I’ve uploaded it again and put the link as text inline

Now I’ve tried this on GNOME OS on today’s “nightly” in Boxes, I see the issue is present there.

It is: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/4324

This has made todays Gnome OS nightly, so hopefully it’ll trickle through to f43 beta soon?

I’m using silverblue. This but’s been there since the 9/17 update. I pinned the 9/16 update and the but isn’t there in that build. So it was introduced in a change between 9/16 and 9/17.

The update to mutter today (which I think is the package that will have the update?) hasn’t solved the issue:

mutter-common-49.0-3.fc43.noarch
mutter-49.0-3.fc43.x86_64

Today’s update fixed the issue, excellent stuff, thanks everyone!

mutter-common-49.0-4.fc43.noarch

Mostly just an FYI since you’ve discovered the fix but this was a known issue and actually a current blocker bug: 2397256 – gnome-shell crashes when dragging a Chromium tab into a new window
