Fedora 42 freon gnome extension fails

On Fedora 42, freon (package gnome-shell-extension-freon.noarch 2:56-5.fc42) fails.
gnome-extensions-app shows that the extension is “incompatible with the current version of GNOME (48.0)”.
I can still monitor temperatures in a terminal with “sensors”, but it would be nice to have the readings back up on the top gnome panel.

This is unfortunately a common fall out that we see each time a new Gnome version is released: gnome-shell extensions take time to catch up.

In this case, it looks like it was recently updated to support Gnome 48:

A bug has been filed for this too but it looks like the maintainer has not got to it yet:

I would comment on the bug to gain the maintainer’s attention to begin with (If you do have the technical know-how, you could also open a pull request to help the maintainer). It is possible that they are no longer active, and there’s a process for un-responsive maintainers here:

Until the package is updated, perhaps you can install it from the Gnome extensions website where the latest version should be available?

This just emphasises again that farming out some basic of UI functions to third parties is a GNOME weakness that impacts the Fedora experience.

In particular fedora ships .f42 packages for freon and other extensions that are broken, do not work when installed, but are still in the repos.

Maybe it is time to abandon any notion of supporting the extensions via packages, Drop them and make users maintain extensions ‘the GNOME way’ via their google-esque web portal.

That way you can direct all the extensions issues straight to the GNOME project and maybe focus some minds there on how the current release-break-fix-release cycle is a royal pain for some users.

I tried installing the latest freon from their repo, and it still did not work.

Then I installed gnome extension “vitals” from

and it works wonderfully, so I second removing the freon extension package from fedora.
