Fedora 42: Does it have telemetry?

Firstly, I wish to thank all those who have contributed to the release of Fedora 42.

Secondly, I hope some of you here could confirm that telemetry is indeed built into Fedora 42. It doesn’t matter to me if it is an opt-in or opt-out choice. (Before I make this post, I read the post Fedora Approves Opt-In Telemetry For Fedora 42 Workstation. That write-up was published a while back, on July 25, 2024.)

P.S.: Is there a way to remove/delete telemetry from Fedora 42’s source code?

See last entry:

Yes of course, you can fork the fedora project and do your own thing while using own infrastructure, own devs and your own project name. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Workstation is one of the many Fedora Spins and Labs

Workstation is by side of KDE the two official Desktop editions Fedora offers. Spins and Labs are community driven projects which include other desktops, while they are not blocking a new Fedora release.

I thought that “opt out” meant that you need to do something deliberately to enable it. If you don’t do anything, then your system will not send any telemetry data.

I could be mistaken, though.

I believe that would be opt-in, as in, deciding to go into a room, instead of deciding to go out of a room (the room in this analogy would be telemetry)

from: Changes/Metrics - Fedora Project Wiki

It will be possible for users to remove the metrics collection components from their systems, using dnf

Based on this I would think the metrics components should be easily removed/uninstalled by the user.

I don’t see those packages on rawhide yet so there’s no way to verify.

As far as I know, currently (mid-April 2025) the lead developer of the project has changed work priorities at Red Hat and has “stopped” the telemetry work, in quotes, because he hasn’t actually done anything since the Fedora change proposal was approved. Red Hat will likely try to find another developer to replace him.

So essentially nothing has happened yet—no planning, no development, no code written and no testing done.

That’s correct. My last status update was here.

Whether or not it can be accurately called telemetry, countme or here fits in the general concern area. Though it does seem to be privacy-respecting.
