Fedora 41 sway freeze & crash then recover - amd gpu

Hello there, I’m having the following issue, while I’m using my fedora sway spin. From time to time (could not get the pattern) while I’m using my workstation , desktop freezes for couple of seconds, then black screen for another 2 or 3 seconds and eventually is recovered (only very very few times did not recover and I had to reboot). Same issue happens before I update to 41 so is not relevant only with the latest version. Perhaps I’m not sure if is relevant with fedora itself or sway or is my GPU about to fail (or failed already). Could be also me, but I have the felling that only happens when I’m using browser (firefox), but as I mention above, could not get the pattern (yet). Here some part of my dmesg logs (can upload full if needed) were gpu is involved:

Finally, my question: is this something related with software (sway or fedora) or is about time to upgrade/replace my GPU . Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum

Well, Sway and Fedora do not usually exhibit this issue. I use Fedora with Sway and they are great.

Your error logs do however point to Sway, Firefox and AMDGPU. As I read it, Firefox is causing an issue in Sway that is resetting the GPU.

Lets start with the noob stuff and check those off the list.
1: Have you updated your system? I suspect yes as you say you had the problem in F40. You are also on the latest kernel.
2: What AMD driver are you using? AMD drivers are included in the Linux kernal so hopefully you have not downloaded or install from any other source (including AMD website/repository)

Things you could try.
1: Plug monitor in to different port (i.e. use display port instead of HDMI)
2: Check Firefox DRM setting, toggle it and see…
3: Uninstall and reinstall Firefox.
4: Post a bug report on Bugzilla.

Lets hope you dont have a GPU hardware problem, the 6700 is still pretty new and should run for over ten years if you haven’t been overclocking or mining.

Hello and thanks !

1: Have you updated your system? I suspect yes as you say you had the problem in F40. You are also on the latest kernel.

Yes my system is up to day as I do it every day

2: What AMD driver are you using? AMD drivers are included in the Linux kernal so hopefully you have not downloaded or install from any other source (including AMD website/repository)

what ever is coming from the default installation, I did not bother to use third party or custom, so no additional installation of any drivers (as I never had problems, except this one).

Regarding this:

Things you could try.
1: Plug monitor in to different port (i.e. use display port instead of HDMI)

I have tried 2 of the DP from the card (did not bother to try the 3rd one) and 1 of the HDMI (as it has only 1), issue still persist.

2: Check Firefox DRM setting, toggle it and see…

Will uncheck it and test it , never though of that, thanks for suggestion. Feedback is coming soon.

3: Uninstall and reinstall Firefox.

Have try it, even used developer edition , still persist

4: Post a bug report on Bugzilla.

Will do, once I confirm that there is no issue with my setup hardware/software (else then FF)

Great you have the tenacity to fix your linux problems!

I did a search for

and found a number of people with similar problems on freedesktop.org and Arch forums (from circa 2021). They seem to not be related to a particular program (e.g. Firefox) as they problem is triggered by various games and also FIrefox.

It seems this issue has persisted over the years through different kernels and linux_firmware versions. It is likely related to an AMDGPU firmware bug. Therefor the right place to file a bug report would be with AMDGPU maintainers.

I’m willing to continue to help look in to it to get a fix but would be great if anyone else has seen this issue and can contribute. Can you add the amdgpu tag to the issue to flag it to those interested in amdgpu?

Here some updates:

switching off the DRM settings on FF did not help , as I had another crash, here is the log from it:

Regarding the tags, either I don’t have permission to do it or I just cant find how/where is the edit button to this topic.

I can’t add tags on a page edit either (on my own posts) - the third box [optional …] is greyed out, a mod can do it though.

To file a bug: How to file a bug :: Fedora Docs

Looking through other fora e.g. OpenSuse, a lot of ‘try this’ is thrown about, but seems downgrading to different firmware / drivers is the answer, so file a bug and see what the real pros say.

Thanks for supporting me on that journey. I’ve found this issue : https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/3698 which seems to correspond almost identically to mine. I’ll wait to see if/how this will be resolved and check if it works for me as well.
