Fedora 40 Workstation Issues: Lagging, Session Logouts, and Black Screens on Laptop with RTX 3080

Hello, I’m using Fedora 40 Workstation on my laptop with a dedicated RTX 3080. I’m using Wayland. RAM: 16GB SWAP: ~32 GB

Lately, I’ve been experiencing some strange issues that seem different in nature but might be related:

  1. Intermittent Lag: Sometimes, my laptop starts lagging heavily. Interestingly, not everything is affected. For example, inputs from Bluetooth devices lag, but the built-in keyboard and mouse work fine. Dragging application windows becomes laggy, but the applications themselves run normally. On YouTube, the site functions as expected, but videos lag. The only solution I’ve found is to restart the laptop.
  2. Session Kickouts: Occasionally, I get kicked out of my session even though everything seems to be working perfectly. I have to log back in. Sometimes, this issue leads to the lagging problem mentioned above.
  3. Unexpected Logouts: When I lock my session and return, I find that I’ve been logged out instead.
  4. Black Screen on Logout: In another scenario, the laptop never recovers from logging out. It just shows a black screen, and none of the inputs work. The only feedback I get is when I use the REISUB key combination; it shows the command description on the screen.

These issues are becoming increasingly disruptive. Any ideas on what might be causing them or how to troubleshoot?

I’ve got kicked out from session after I posted this.
Here are some logs:

I came here to post about another Wayland issue and saw your post, so I thought I’d share my experience instead on yoru thread to support it. I’m noticing similar issues with my Nvidia card (RTX3060), but only since switching to Wayland from Xorg.

I’ve been using Fedora for a while and recently made the switch to Wayland after updating to the NVidia 560 drivers through the daily software updates. Since then, I’ve run into issues like screen tearing and glitches, particularly with windows and browsers, as well as those issues you mentioned.

I understand that Wayland is seen as the future, but in my experience, it feels less stable than Xorg. I’m not very technical, so I can’t explain why; it’s just how it’s been for me.

That said, I’ve been really happy with Linux overall, especially Fedora. Fedora just lets you get on with your work without getting in the way, and that’s been fantastic.
