Fedora 40 Wi-Fi failes to associate after update

After updating to 40, my system (Intel Wireless 7265) fails to associate with my AP.

NetworkManager[219027]: <info>  [1725958739.4061] device (wlp2s0): supplicant interface state: authenticating -> associating
NetworkManager[219027]: <info>  [1725958739.4062] device (p2p-dev-wlp2s0): supplicant management interface state: authenticating -> associating

kernel: wlp2s0: associate with b0:95:75:24:a3:20 (try 2/3)
kernel: wlp2s0: associate with b0:95:75:24:a3:20 (try 3/3)
kernel: wlp2s0: association with b0:95:75:24:a3:20 timed out

I have tried disabling NetworkManager and used wpa_supplicant and wpa_cli with similar results.

nl80211: Association request send successfully
nl80211: Drv Event 20 (NL80211_CMD_DEL_STATION) received for wlp2s0
nl80211: Delete station b0:95:75:24:a3:20
nl80211: Drv Event 38 (NL80211_CMD_ASSOCIATE) received for wlp2s0
nl80211: MLME event 38; timeout with b0:95:75:24:a3:20
wlp2s0: Event ASSOC_TIMED_OUT (14) received

Odd thing is I only see this behavior on the 2.4 GHz band. I can still connect to the 5 GHz.
I think I had never connected to the 2.4 before, it might be new connections giving me trouble.

Steps I have gone thru so far:

  • Cold reboot my system
  • Reboot the AP
  • Disabled MAC randomization
  • Disabled power saving on the wireless interface

I’ll try that.

No luck. Downgraded from wpa_supplicant v2.11 to v2.10. Still seeing the association timeout

Maybe 2.4 GHz configuration differs from 5 GHz. Are other systems connecting to 2.4 GHz?

Have you checked for Dell firmware updates?

There is a truncated line in your journalctl output. Also we don’t need to see your hostname, so for posting, it is best to use --no-hostname. One way to wrap long lines is to add |cat when posting journalctl output.

Yes.

I have not yet. Will do that.

And I updated the journalctl output.

I don’t see any pending firmware updates with Gnome Software or fwupmgr.

But, my BIOS version is real old.

As I understand, fwupd could update that for me if I had UEFI capsule updates enabled. I suspect that is not available for my BIOS version. I will check again, but I think I need to update the BIOS from a USB flashdrive.

BIOS is updated.
