Fedora 39 (Random) Freezes

Greetings all,

I’m writing this post as I am pretty much at my wits end and am seeking help as I myself don’t know what else I could do to fix this issue.

Some info that might help y’all:

  • Installed Fedora 39 Workstation with Fedora Media Writer on a USB dongle (16GB).

  • I think I reinstalled about 2 times, 1st time (Fedora 39 Workstation | Gnome) I was clueless
about this so I went ahead and configured it with resolution scaling, gnome extensions, tlp
afaik. The second time I made the same installation but left everything vanilla.

  • I tried installing arch as I could choose which packages I wanted to install but unfortunately it
froze during my arch manual install twice as well so I quit the installation process.

  • I then proceeded to install my current DE: Fedora 39 Workstation KDE which seemed to have
much less freeze but they still occur.

  • The latest freeze happened like this while using Firefox (although the freezes have happened on different applications as well but perhaps this is a good indication?): I tried loading up a Youtube video but after a couple seconds it showed an error (unfortunately I have yet to reproduce the same freeze. My screen froze and while i did have system monitor in the background, when I tried to change my Firefox window to my system monitor window you could see that it froze in the taskbar. After a couple seconds my cursor also proceeded to freeze. As of now this is the freeze where I paid attention as to how it unfolded. Unfortunately I could not see the RAM, CPU usage or temps for the reasons mentioned a bit ago.

My Specs:

Lenovo ThinkPad T15 G2, I5 11th gen, 32GB RAM 1TB NVME SSD

I hope this may give some clues on what the cause is. If there’s anything else or commands that I need to execute to further help diagnose it I’m willing to do them. This is also my first time writing something like this so if you have any feedback feel free to enlighten me.

Many thanks in advance for helping me.

I should probably add that when the freeze happens I can do nothing no tty or terminal, the system is completely frozen. The only thing that I did was hold the power button for about 10 seconds to force shut down and reboot my system for it to get frozen again later xD.

Do you have another pc you can ssh into the laptop from?
It would then be possible to look for clues that are lost when you force a power off. For example look at sudo dmesg.

Hi there Barry A Scott,

I managed to connect via ssh via my desktop but before that I happened to notice my CPU have really bad spikes before it starts to freeze. Also noticed that when the freezes would happen my fans exhausts would be quite warm maybe this’ll give some insight?

I will post the the full log in 2 or 3 parts below as I reached character limit, just incase I might leave out crucial information.

ag@fedora:~$ sudo dmesg

We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local System
Administrator. It usually boils down to these three things:

#1) Respect the privacy of others.
    #2) Think before you type.
#3) With great power comes great responsibility.

For security reasons, the password you type will not be visible.

If the CPU over heats the system will first go very slow, can look like its hung. Then if that does not fix the heat issue the machine will power off.

You can install the sensors package sudo dnf install lm_sensors that addes the sensors command so that you can see the temporature sensors in your laptop.
You will need to run sudo sensors-detect to configure the sensors first.

What does sensors report? In particular look at the CPU temperatures (coretemp-isa-0000).

This is with only my terminal and 1 browser tab open using Thorium browser.
Perhaps this is a little too high for barely utilizing my laptop considering the specs I have?

edit: put the text paragraph outside the code block.

It is interesting that the fan is running and temperature is normal for a CPU.

You could watch sensors in a terminal windows and see if the temperature goes high before things go wrong.

I did not spot anything in dmesg output as special.

On boot:

CPU: 32*

temp3: 23*
temp4: 0*
temp5: 25*
temp6: 31*
temp7: 31*

Few minutes after boot:

CPU 37*

temp3: 27*
temp4: 0*
temp5: 29*
temp6: 34*
temp7: 34*

I watched the temperatures this past week and don’t think I really encountered any anomalies except when I boot up after a couple minutes on very light load that ‘temp6’ and ‘temp7’ suddenly spike to 60* for a second or so. But no freeze whatsoever. I also noticed that my ‘temp6’ and ‘temp7’ always were the ones with the highest value, as I don’t know what temp for what component is. Not sure right now how I could try to fix this any further. I may have just a faulty laptop.

Hello @alive ,
I have read comments here about random freezes with Lenovo Thinkpads, perhaps this (i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] GPU HANG: ecode 12:1:859ffffb, in gnome-shell (#4825) · Issues · drm / intel · GitLab) is related. There were some also related to the lid sensor causing the Laptop to suspend randomly, but I think your issue is closer to what is discussed at the link I provided. If you can ssh into your laptop, another poster there could do the same and recover, perhaps you can try that too the next time a freeze occurs. I don’t think you are having an actual heating problem per se.

Hi Mr. jakfrost,

I read the post you linked which led me to another post that was mentioned by a user in the post you sent (https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues/4858#note_1425529). And I installed ‘igt-gpu-tools’ and looked at the frequency of my IGPU using sudo intel_gpu_frequency -g where I saw the min and max frequency and set the max frequency using sudo intel_gpu_frequency -m (see screenshot below).

I did Immediately notice on my CPU graph and system monitor that the idle usage was way lower than when it was on the default frequency.

Another thing I noticed after changing this is that as shown in the ‘system monitor graph’ screenshot below my CPU has a few spikes which are just from me opening a couple applications. It is that my graph never exceeded 150-ish percent in usage while previously I frequently saw my CPU usage (randomly) spike up into the 300% - 400%.

Since applying these settings/configurations there has been not a single freeze yet as it has been about an hour since I booted up and applied them. So far so good if I may say so.

Of course I will keep watching my laptop to see if any freeze happens again or not.

edit: Forgot to add ‘system monitor graph’

Well just after posting the message above my laptop crashed :face_exhaling:.

I was just adding the main page of fedora to my bookmarks bar and it froze on me again xD.

ag@fedora:~$

I just managed to capture another freeze on idle.

I noticed it started spiking up again and after about 5 seconds of constant high load it froze. I guess it is more so related to my CPU than my temperatures? Also every time it freezes the fan keeps exhausting hot air it won’t stop till I perform a manual force shutdown. I guess high CPU usage → freeze → hot CPU fan exhaust. CPU probably stays on high load even though my system froze?

If it is overclocking then maybe set the power profile to energy saver to see if that throttles things down a bit and keeps the laptop running. Your cpu may not like 400% overclock for sustained periods. This can cause damage if let to continue I would think. Did you use another power management package instead of the default (which is powerprofiles daemon)?

I changed my power profile to energy saver and also set my frequency with sudo intel_gpu_frequency -e. After setting it to that and recalling the sudo intel_gpu_frequency -g it seemed to change all my values to 300 MHz. But I still saw an all time high of 800% peak after opening my browser . I noticed that using any of the ‘igt-gpu-tools’ settings that I change seem to reset every time I reboot?

As for that I did not on this installation. On my very first installation with gnome DE I did use tlp and set it up with the help of a YouTube video but on my current Fedora installation I have it pretty much as vanilla as it can get.

Also so far what I’ve noticed is that opening any application spikes my CPU to very high usage percentages. They are about 300%-800% as shown in the screenshot below.

And as you can see I barely have anything open considering the specifications that I have on this device.

At the moment after applying the energy saver profile and using the efficient GPU profile, while I still see the very high spikes in CPU usage I managed to catch it almost crashing/freezing twice. It showed the same behaviour when it was about to crash but maybe because I lowered the frequency and the energy profile It only seemed to give a hiccup for a second or two.

Seems like I’m about to find the root cause of the freezing issue.

Lowering the frequency and using the energy saving profile also seemed to blow out much less heat from my CPU fan exhausts.

I will keep using my laptop for now to see if I notice anything unusual or a freeze again.

From the lm-sensors github repo …

Laptops, on the other hand, rarely expose any hardware monitoring
chip. They often have some BIOS and/or ACPI magic to get the CPU
temperature value, but that’s about it. For such laptops, the lm-sensors
package is of no use (sensors-detect will not find anything), and you have
to use acpi instead.

As sensors uses/is lm-sensors this is likely applicable to you as far as thermal monitoring goes with laptops.

Well as you previously mentioned that my issue was probably not about heating. I do think so too, after setting it to energy saving mode and tinkering a little bit with the frequency. As of now setting my frequency from the default 1300MHz to 900MHz did cause a freeze but much later (about an hour or so). So I’m changing the values to see what the highest frequency is that I can get without or very few freezes is currently on 750Mhz max freq. But right now I noticed that after opening a new tab that my CPU is at max load for the whole time, at least I can still move my cursor even though every application froze. I could still close them as for why my CPU stays on high load is something I have no clue on.

I’ll continue to tinker with the frequency.

I’ll update again in case something happens.
