Fc40 mesa 24.1.4-2 update causes amdgpu freezes on videoplayback

Hi, just a quick PSA the latest mesa 24.1.4-2 update causes my desktop (AMD 7480u) to eventually freeze while playing videos on youtube using firefox. The videos are also corrupted when they start playing. No idea if it’s tied to a certain codec or if other applications are also impacted.

I reverted to mesa 24.1.2-7 from the archive repositories. After a reboot no more issues, for now I’m excluding the mesa packages in my updates. Not really sure where to report the issue though.

Corrupted AV1 video decoding on AMD with Mesa 24.1.4 (#11533) · Issues · Mesa / mesa · GitLab seems to match on certain points although they only mention corrupted video and no crashes.

You can report bugs against Mesa here:

Reported against the Fedora package here FEDORA-2024-1ce911b57d — unspecified update for mesa — Fedora Updates System

Red Hat bugzilla report by @agurenko here 2299031 – mesa 24.1.4 breaks AV1 video playback in firefox on amdgpu

The issue also seems to be fixable in multiple ways which might further complicate things (can’t really judge as I’m not a packager/developer). But as I understand it now the options seem to be:

  • revert back to older version of mesa like I’ve done for the moment
  • use newer mesa version together with ffmpeg fixes, this only fixes systemwide ffmpeg, some applications come with their own bundled version of ffmpeg which might still have issues with newer mesa versions
  • use newer mesa version together with ffmpeg fixes and also use a fixed version of Firefox, using their own bundled version of ffmpeg, the fixes for this seem to be included from Firefox 130+

Installed Fusion which I was not using. Updated and the issue is resolved : no more corruption, no issues at all
