F37 After Upgrade - External Monitor on TBolt Dock Crashes Gnome

Since I upgraded my F36 system to F37 I cannot use my external monitor on my thunderbolt 4 docking station. It worked reasonably well before the upgrade.

I get a WSOD saying “Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can’t recover Please contact a system administrator.”

I can eventually switch to a vtty after a hang. If I unplug, I get returned to a GDM login screen.

I’ve tried switch to Xorg only (/etc/gdm/custom.conf), however that did not help.

I can connect the HDMI output on my laptop directly to the monitor and it works.

Also, initially after the upgrade the nvidia drivers were messed up, so it used nouveau, which worked in both situations, however, the laptop then runs hot, slow and laggy.

I fixed the nvidia install following the suggestions in an another post in this forum. (Thanks!) Installed from the RPM Fusion Repo.

Additional things I’ve tried:

  • Installing a fresh F37 to another partition, however the exact same issue.
  • Installing some other rolling distros to try and test, but they had other issues, gave up on that for now

I’ve kept updating as new packages arrived, hoping there would be a fix, but nothing so far. Overall the system works well, however, it has broken my workflow and I cannot use it with my docking station (which provides power, ethernet, keyboard, mouse, and other external devices).

I’m not sure what else I can do. Open to suggestions. What logs could help?

Also, I’ve switched from Grub boot to systemd-boot (I did that back since my original F35 install). I followed these instructions to do that: https://kowalski7cc.xyz/blog/systemd-boot-fedora-32

This, combined with the failure when attached to the dock implies a docking station issue.

More information specifically about the docking station in use may be helpful.
Please post the output of lsusb and inxi -Fzxx with the docking station attached so we can see the hardware and how it is configured. Also tell us the brand and model of the docking station.

I did list the brand above, but here it is again:

I’ll have to do a little wrangling, since I cannot use the GUI when attached to the DS. I’ll write the info out to a text file, and then grab that after I detach it. I’ll get that as soon as I can…

(Getting the HDMI cable out and around is a hassle, hence the wrangling…)

Thanks for the quick reply!

Although it sounds like a reasonable conclusion, it was working reasonably well just before the upgrade. Also, it works when I have to boot to Windows…

I’m going to try it in Windows and see if i I can find any issues there…

Okay, my hopes were high after booting to Windows and initially had an issue with the external display (Windows worked fine though). So I did a dock reset, which I didn’t mention, but I had done last time as well. (The only “reset” is to unplug the power). That “fixed” it for Windows, and it was working fine there.

So I rebooted back to my F37 install, hoping that would fix it, but unfortunately it did not. The same White Screen of Death issue.

What else can I provide to help troubleshoot this?

TIA

PS: I just realized that the reply in the referenced thread to fix the nvidia install was from you! So, thanks you for that assistance as well!

Yes, I expected that result.
I did not mean to imply hardware problems with the dock, but rather that the fedora drivers do not fully support that dock (if at all).

Of course it works with windows since the vendors work with the big gorilla to make sure their hardware has drivers and works. Unfortunately Linux does not have the same vendor support and with kernel upgrades at the pace they are the open source drivers often are unable to keep up.

Do you have any idea about what drivers were in use on fedora 36? What kernel version it was working with?

In your output from lsusb I seem to see the dock several times, all with 17ef:30b[456789ab] identifiers. Strangely they show on both bus 002 & 003 but the only ones I can identify for certain are the 30b4, 30b5, & 30bb, with 30ba as a suspect. The remainder show as usb hubs.

We may be able to gather more info by first unplugging the dock, then in 2 different terminal windows run journalctl -f in one terminal and dmesg -C followed by dmesg -w in the other. Then plug back in the dock and after waiting long enough for the system to configure it copy the text from both windows and post it here. This way we can see exactly what the system response is when connecting and configuring the device.
The dock seems to have its own power supply, so while the dock is disconnected, power cycle it before reconnecting to the laptop.

I also see that you have an nvidia 3060 with the nvidia 520 driver, and am wondering if you have set that dGPU as primary following this instruction. This also may have an effect on the graphics via the docking station.

We’re experiencing a power brownout (in our building) and the lame landlord and building manager cannot come until tomorrow. I’ll have to pick this up tomorrow or later…

Thanks for the input so far! :+1:

Okay, finally have some stable power back.

For F36, I didn’t record the drivers it was using, however, everything was installed in the exact same way. I updated my system basically everyday, so I had it working on all the 5.x series kernels, right up to the 6.0.8-200.fc36. It’s essentially the same kernel now in F37 (6.0.8-300.fc37)

I did try that when I forced GDM to use Xorg instead of Wayland, but just to confirm, I just did it again. Same issue, but it’s actually a little worse than with Wayland as I cannot switch to any virtual terminals once I have the WSOD. The system is essentially locked. However, in the same way the system comes back to the GDM login once I disconnect the dock.

Basically, I never needed to do anything special in F36, the dock and external monitor just worked.

As for the information requested. Here it is. Since as soon as I connect the docking station my GUI crashes, I booted in multi-user mode and used multiple virtual terminals and tee'd the output to some files.

(Since the files were too large for the message limit, I’m linking to the Gitlab Snippets…)

Let me know what else can help.

TIA

Looking through those I see that most of the devices in that dock are seen and configured. I do not, however, see any references to the video pass thru.

There are 2 important parts to graphics pass-thru on a docking station.

  1. The usb-C port used on the laptop must be properly configured (both driver and hardware) as a video port.
  2. The OS must be able to see and configure the video port on the docking station.

I am not familiar enough with your laptop or docking station to know the fine details, but hopefully the information already collected and posted here will give someone else pointers on how to assist.

My hint about using the nvidia card as primary should enable the video out on the usb port if you copied the nvidia.conf file as shown in those docs then rebooted(and if the port is capable of managing video out.)

Continuation of previous post.

Thanks @computersavvy !

I started to be concerned that the update has messed up something in the dock, so I kept trying different distros. I also booted to windows and forced a firmware upgrade to the reinstall the most recent. None of those fixed the issue.

In trying those other distros, I noticed the thing in common was Gnome 43. So I thought I would step back to 42.

So, in order to capture some logs from something like the previous setup, and to test my theory, I installed Ultramarine Linux Gnome Edition, which is still at F36 level and Gnome 42.

So the install is fresh, updated to the latest, and with the RPM Fusion nvidia-akmod installation done. GDM remains in Wayland just as default. Kernel is at 6.0.8-200.fc36. Here’s some logs with the Docking station attached and detached. Everything works again, as it was with F36/Gnome 42.

journalctl -f

In the same Gitlab Snippets:

https://gitlab.com/-/snippets/2461194

So it works perfectly well with Gnome 42.

Sounds really clear that this is a gnome 43 bug or regression and should be reported as such.

Finally got around to posting a bug, hopefully it for the correct component:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/6162

Let’s hope it gets some traction…

I team,

In a recently update of Fed37 I got the same problem, on a thinkpad x1 I could get it solved by re-installing nvidia drivers.

Best Regards,
Cilmar S. Oliveira

Thanks Cilmar!

Glad it worked for you! Nothing has worked for me…it’s really hampering my workflow. Been through multiple kernel updates and multiple nvidia driver updates. I try each time, but still no joy…

When you say you reinstalled the nvidia drivers, did you do a full removal and then install again, or did you used something like sudo dnf reinstall akmod-nvidia?

This is still an issue for me. I am running a Dell 9315. I’ve also just upgraded to F38 to see if that improves startup performance (it doesn’t). The only way I can get Wayland to recognise the two external screens I have - is by going to Display, switching off a screen. The first screen external screen then pops into life, I then re-enable the second external display and we are up and running again.
