DVD playback problems

DVDs were playing for me on Fedora 42, but I recently did a clean install of Fedora 43 and now I have problems with playback.

I’ve got libdvdcss installed according to the instructions on rpmfusion and I’m able to play DVDs. but all DVDs freeze during the menu. Sometime I can skip past the menu to play the main title, but the picture is visually scrambled.

I’m attempting to play DVDs in GNOME Videos, but I have the same problems with VLC.

I analysed my system backup from Fedora 42, and these are the packages required for smooth playback:

  • libdvdcss
  • libdvdread
  • libdvdnav
  • dvdauthor

So this resolved my playback problem:

sudo dnf install libdvdnav libdvdread libdvdcss dvdauthor

DVDs play smoothly now, in both GNOME Video and VLC.
