now

sudo dnf clean packages
Config error: [Errno 30] Read-only file system: '/var/log/dnf.log': '/var/log/dnf.log'

And now i don’t have mouse pointer

Can’t open apps like firefox or something and after some reboot and tried to boot other recovery kernels issue was same and now i can’t boot system crashed strange.

I find some btrfs error here.

It sounds like a glitch happened — probably a hardware problem (either a transient problem from a power surge or a cosmic ray, but it’s always possible that there was some software bug.

I think it’s unlikely that this was related directly to the update, but rather that an update like this causes a large amount of memory, CPU, and disk usage — which is when problems appear.

When there is a glitch like this, filesystems like ext4 or xfs may not even notice, resulting in silent corruption. For better or worse, btrfs tends to react in a very conservative way, entirely refusing to mount the filesystem.

We have some other topics around here about recovery in similar situations…

Possibly

The error message on your first screen is perfectly clear, two packages fail simple authentication test that can happen with beta release or anything really. Simply remove the two packages with dependencies and reinstall after update, or just wait.

I have issues with 38 beta on a Microsoft Surface Go with the mouse disappearing … just reboot (something related to closed source hardware and specific implementation of EFI a bit like Apple).

System is now in unbootable state i am thinking if switching to a different filesystem reduce this failure?

Yes cosmic rays sometime flips bits here and there but btrfs is registrant to this as far as i know small chnages can be silently fixed but i don’t think it really…
I will include a journalctl for better indepth view if something software hardware what actually happend.

I don’t think btrfs is actually (at this point) more unstable than other choices — just more likely to show problems in this dramatic way.

https://paste.centos.org/view/43ab6aba
what kind of error it is???

$sudo dnf update
error: sqlite failure: CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS 'Packages' (hnum INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT,blob BLOB NOT NULL): disk I/O error
error: cannot open Packages index using sqlite - No such file or directory (2)
error: cannot open Packages database in /usr/lib/sysimage/rpm
Error: Error: rpmdb open failed

It says:

Is this mean my drive failing…
I thing this is the reason why btrfs error happend before.

Maybe.
You can usually check the health of a device with smartctl -a /dev/<device>
This may require installation of smartmontools and smartmontools-selinux, but gives a lot of information for devices that are supported (most are).

This can also be a filesystem failure caused by a software related error.
If the hardware is working properly, solving the problem generally requires the following steps:

  1. Boot a live session.
  2. Make sure the filesystem is not mounted.
  3. Perform filesystem check fixing possible errors.
  4. Set up a chroot.
  5. Rebuild the RPM database.
  6. Verify all installed RPM packages and reinstall the corrupted ones.

Sure i will do it tomorrow

I juat installed again and i will try to do it.
But i think there is a hardware issue for sure. I am thinking to switch to rhel if any issues happens after that as i have rhel dev or centos steam lets see.

It could mean that. It can also be a loose/failing cable. I would definitely take up @computersavvy’s suggestion in checking SMART and if it shows any issues, migrate drives. In any case, it’s always a good idea to back up your data, but most especially before upgrading your OS or whenever you see a hint of disk hardware issues.

It’s not uncommon for the kernel to put the disk in read-only mode after consecutive IO errors to prevent further damage to the drive while affording you a hope at getting one last backup in before it goes fully offline. I suggest you backup what you can immediately and replace that drive.

After making a backup of the drive, you can boot from a ā€œliveā€ USB and install smartmontools there
to check drive health. Some vendors also have tests, some require Windows, others provide ISO images that boot FreeDOS (using legacy BIOS?).

You should consider whether age and/or environment warmer and wetter than S. California might be affecting cables and contacts. Auto parts stores now carry ā€œconnection enhancerā€ fluid due to the number of computers and associated data cables in modern cars.

that does not work but thanks

can you lookinto the output i cant understand if anything wrong here as i was moving large files like isos and movies which are 10-20gigs and i find no error ad file copied successfully and it is playable i have done that many times from 1 partition to another and reverse i have 4 partition and i have done this almost upto 100gigs still no issues and even i have install many apps using store with flatpaks and this apps installed with flatpak opens without a issue.

i am thinking if there is something else.

From the man page from smartctl:

The Attribute table printed out by smartctl also shows the ā€œTYPEā€ of the Attribute. Attributes are one of two possible types: Pre-failure or Old age. Pre-failure Attributes are ones which, if less than or equal to their threshold values, indicate pending disk failure. Old age, or usage Attributes, are ones which indicate end-of-product life from old-age or normal aging and wearout, if the Attribute value is less than or equal to the threshold. Please note: the fact that an Attribute is of type ā€˜Pre-fail’ does not mean that your disk is about to fail! It only has this meaning if the Attribute’s current Normalized value is less than or equal to the threshold value.

If the Attribute’s current Normalized value is less than or equal to the threshold value, then the ā€œWHEN_FAILEDā€ column will display ā€œFAILING_NOWā€. If not, but the worst recorded value is less than or equal to the threshold value, then this column will display ā€œIn_the_pastā€. If the ā€œWHEN_FAILEDā€ column has no entry (indicated by a dash: ā€˜-’) then this Attribute is OK now (not failing) and has also never failed in the past.

None of the output here is under the thresholds, so this at least suggests that there are no hardware failures that the drive itself has detected. I agree with others that it might still be something like a bad cable or loose connection, but at this point I’d suggest either a software bug or a temporary glitch. Since you’ve reinstalled, I think at this point all we can do is wait to see if it happens again. (Like this.)
