Debugging Graphics Issues - How to narrow down root cause?

I have been dealing with this for the last few days. Its across lots of different circumstances and relatively intermittent. Sometimes it is colorful blocks of pixels that goes away or flickers as I interact with UI. Any tips on how to narrow down if this is either:

  • Fedora
  • Firmware
  • Hardware
  • Specific application/program

I’ve tried doing updates on all software/firmware etc and the troubles persist. Trying to become self-reliant here a bit more so that I have some sort of decision support workflow of how to debug when things like this happen. Debugging (most of the time) is user error, in which case finding a solution is trivial, albeit, sometimes tedious. But this cannot be user error, I don’t think I’m directly causing this!

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Edit: Realized it would be helpful to have some system information:

Looks like video/GPU memory, but could be something like using nouveau on NVIDIA instead of proprietary.

I’d try other desktop environments from LiveUSBs, and some games under Windows.
