Can't Install Apache OpenOffice on Silverblue

Yes, I’ve gone through the toolbox route and found some success, but still some failures ha that are just working against me at this point. IDK - i don’t think that I should be working on a system that literally works against every and anything that I do. I now see why people say: only use Linux if you don’t value your time haha Flatpaks come incomplete in some instances, for example Gnome Boxes - the flatpak version doesn’t allow for you to use a thumbdrive on your main OS. Gnome Boxes shuts down constantly too so I’m just not a fan of that software. I found this stuff out the hard way and quite frankly, there only is really a hard way with Silverblue and the hard way is more than expensive, as it takes your time, money and then more time and the more money + general sanity. With Workstation I have to worry about breaking something any/every time I install something - so I just simply can’t use a blend of systems that just work against me non-stop. I will give it a shot at some point in the future though. At least now there’s knowledge that something exists in the abyss of computing that was originally meant to protect your privacy.

Thank you all for the suggestions, all of which I have read through and tried out for my use case. Unfortunately, Apche OpenOffice has refused to install.

I am running Fedora Workstation 38 and gotam trying to install the latest release of OpenOffice, 4.1.14.

I used “sudo rpm -Uvih *rpm” as suggested by the instructions and the rpm files install successfully without any error. However, when I got to the desktop integration using “sudo rpm -i openoffice4.1.14-freedesktop-menus-4.1.14-9811.noarch.rpm” I initially got a conflict error with a Libreoffice package. So, I uninstalled Libreoffice completely and ran the command again, this time it was successful. But, OpenOffice won’t run via “openoffice” or “openoffice4” commands. A solution somewhere suggested running it with “soffice” command. This didn’t work but exposed a lack of dependencies from LibreOffice that I supposedly had to remove earlier. Good thing was that it gave a suggestion to proceed with changes, for which I selected “y”. Some files were downloaded but it failed to install packages, citing conflicts between the libreoffice core package is needs and the installed openoffice free desktop menus.

After going through all the instructions I could find, and eventually installing OpenOffice, it is not available under my applications. It cannot be launched via terminal using the existing instructions.

What do I do to install OpenOffice on Fedora Workstation?
If I was to give up, how would I clear my system of all the installations that may I have occurred during this process (I would like to get back my HDD space since these files would not be useful anymore)?

Thanks in advance.

Apache OpenOffice is old and unmaintained. Please use Libre Office instead.

To expand on OpenOffice vs. LibreOffice:

There’s a huge difference; OpenOffice was last updated nearly a decade ago (aside from minor point versions that didn’t really add anything). LibreOffice has had tons of releases since, with feature work in every release.

There’s really no comparison. Everyone really should be using LibreOffice instead of OpenOffice.

LibreOffice is a successor project to OpenOffice.org, commonly known as OpenOffice, which had its last major update in 2014. LibreOffice adds many extra features and improved Microsoft Office compatibility, and has regular releases with security updates. Benny Isaiah,

Thank you very much, I found your advice to be a blessing and now I can use Open Office on my Linux Laptop and I am so thrilled. This was for me the only missing program I could not get on Fedroa 38, 39, Robotics, Python Class, KDE, etc… And now finally I can get ride of dual boot and got straight to Linux. I had a hard time giving Windows XP or 10 without open office because I spent so much time using open office. (I think I was on open office the I was with my wife! I use that program for many different parts in my business because I love the word free!!!
