Cannot boot after update

Hi folks,

I’m hoping you can help me with an issue encountered on my MacBook Air (2014) running Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop 39. Following a recent update, the system has stopped booting and displays the following error message:

error ../../grub-core/fs/fshelp.c:257:file
'/initramfs-6.7.7-200.fc39.x86_64.img' not found
Press any key to continue...

(Pressing keys does not do anything)

I suspect the update might have been interrupted, potentially during the kernel update process.

I would be grateful for any any guidance or steps to help me fix this issue.

Thank you

Hi, it might help:

The update may certainly have been interrupted – potentially by an early reboot.

If that is the only error then I would try first using the following steps.

  1. ls /boot to see what other errors may show up in that directory and what else may be missing or corrupt.
  2. Remove all the installed packages for the 6.7.7 kernel. sudo dnf remove kernel\*6.7.7\*
  3. Reinstall the 6.7.7 kernel sudo dnf upgrade. Wait at least 3 to 5 minutes after the install completes before rebooting.

Also worth checking how much disk space is free on /boot.
You should have lots of free disk space, but if /boot is full that is likely why the upgrade failed.

For my desktop I see:

$ df -h /boot
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/nvme1n1p2 974M 203M 704M 23% /boot

Thank you @otsoa @barryascott for your replies.

I followed @computersavvy 's instructions and they’ve fixed the problem.
