Autoclick on left corner in Fedora 35

Edit: This left corner is usually around the Firefox refresh button and where the “AskFedora” logo resides.

I don’t what kind of libinput update I receive, but things are a little bad. You might be wondering, how do I manage to daily use this laptop for a whole month? Well, this is how:

  • Something gets triggered after an hour or two when I get to experience this bug.
  • To solve this buggy situation, I close all applications (i.e Firefox, LibreOffice, CherryTree) before it autodeletes/erases my files and shut down the laptop, and restart it again. Very painful to go through.

The laptop was running fine when I upgrade from F34 to F35. All these months, it ran peacefully without any issues. I wonder what caused this mess? Kernel update? Libput update? GNOME update? Wayland update? Endless possibilities.

I don’t know if these two other issues are relatable or not:
When I press the Caps lock button, the small white indicator (which is inside the button) doesn’t light, but it does light I press it at the boot time. So, the Caps button is kind of misbehaving at Fedora at the moment, which I very find weird. If you press it at boot time, then it’s ON forever. So, I have to wait till I shut down/restart when the kernel is closing/starting that is when I hit CAPS as fast as I can. Stranger times to live.

Bios setting which says, “Recognize Fn keys as Media keys” are no longer recognized by Fedora anymore. This means I need to press Fn + Escape every time when I restart/start my device. More pain to go through.

Is there a way I can properly contribute to this situation and hopefully resolve and happy life ever after? Then please do show me a way out of this. I have always been keen on reporting bug reports but I get lost in the wild.

Device: Dell Laptop (5548) with Fedora 35. Synaptic. Touch Screen laptop.
I am hoping, maybe (a big MAYBE), libinput version 1.20 fix this. But that’s a big IF. Site Help & Feedback

Current Libinput version: 1.19.3

Updates on the issue:
I. Created GitLab issue in Libinput repo.
ii. After discussing the issue, I found that this problem could be either related to kernel or hardware. To understand, which one is creating a problem, we need to understand the output of sudo ./hid-recorder.
So far I’ve been waiting for libinput devs to take a look at it and replay. It’s been 15hr+, they haven’t looked at it yet. If some of you do know how to read that log, I am linking it here. If you understand it, do let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Do you mean the top left corner?

Can you explain the issue better please? What gets triggered? How do you know it’s an autoclick? What apps/windows is it happening in?

Also—have you created a new user to test if this issue persists there?

The issue with the caps lock etc. sound more like hardware issues tbh because the light etc. there are not OS controlled (as far as I know—these are hardware based). So it’s best to create a new user to see if your issues persist, and to also perhaps try a different OS using a live media.

Do you mean the top left corner?

Yes, my mistake.

What gets triggered?

I honestly don’t know. The laptop works fine for an hour or so after a cold boot, and then suddenly I start to see auto clicks.

have you created a new user to test if this issue persists there?

I will let you know by doing this.

The issue with the caps lock

I think the CAPS lock would probably light on if I use live Fedora. I will try this too…

Do you mean the hot corner (top left corner)? If so, you can turn that behaviour off in Settings.

@ankursinha
Found shocking new things:
i. CAPS key works without any issue in Live Fedora 35.
ii. CAPS key works without any issue in the new bond user account.
iii. Surprisingly I only see 1 error in GNOME logs in this new user account, i.e:
03d3c9d50c3d2efaa5509183ce8e250b66e9741f.png
But in my original user account pranav, I see like 8 errors after each cold boot.

What I’m I suppose to do!? I wonder. Leave my original user account and create EVERYTHING from start? That’s a painful process. Any shortcuts/ideas I love to hear.

@augenauf

Do you mean the hot corner (top left corner)?

Haha. Nice. Really funny. So, I couldn’t differentiate between a hot corner VS a touch panic?

The main question: What really is broken inside my main user account?!

Correct. Your issue description was very vague and not clear at all. I was just asking in order to seek clarity. Good luck with your touch panic in the “left right corner

It would help if we could see these errors. Can you please post the journal logs?

Well, we’re trying to diagnose the issue, but I’m sorry to say that there isn’t enough information here at the moment, certainly not to be able to advise you. You’re telling us that there’s “autoclicking”, but I’m honestly not sure what that means—it may be clear to you and you may think you’re explaining it well, but I don’t quite get it yet.

For example: do you actually see a click—how do you know it’s a mouse click—does the mouse pointer move (do the logs tell you this, and if they do, we need to see these logs)? or is the cursor jumping to a different location (which does not necessarily mean a click)? or is your app window changing or is it something else? Is it happening in all applications or in a specific applications?

Please provide all the information you can. We cannot debug the issue unless we can narrow down what’s happening to be able to associate it with a particular hardware/software component.

More questions:

  • can we have the output of fpaste --sysinfo --printonly please?
  • what desktop environment is this?
  • since we know it’s related to your user only—what customisations have you made? themes/extensions?

Edit: given that you do not see these issues on a new user, we know that it’s unlikely to be software bug in libinput or another package.

ops, I thought I fixed that. Thanks for mentioning it.

Desktop environment = GNOME 41.5
Themes installed = Ubuntu Yaru, Yaru icons, etc.

About that, does the new user have full authority to view/retrieve logs? Because that might be a cause why the error number are so low. I realized that since this new bond user is not root/owner users. GNOME logs said something like, “Some of the logs couldn’t be retrieved” when I was in bond user.

These are only 3 extensions I use:

 ⟹ ls
appindicatorsupport@rgcjonas.gmail.com
caffeine@patapon.info
ding@rastersoft.com

I used to compile and run an extension named Just Perfection from GitLab, but I long uninstalled that about 2 weeks ago.
And last but not the list:

⟹ fpaste --sysinfo --printonly

I am not aware that a user needs to be a super-user to see logs. journalctl -b seems to always work for me.

This may be related, but not easy to confirm just yet. Did you use X11 with the new user too, or did you use Wayland when testing it?

The best way of narrowing this down would be to look into each customisation individually. You can either add your customisations to the new user one by one to see what causes the issue to start OR you can undo customisations on your current user one by one to see what stops the issue from happening.

PS: still not entirely sure I understand the issue, so if you could please clarify points requested in my previous post, that’ll help.

No, the options are clicked on in that certain area no matter which app I’m using. I don’t see the cursor jump. I see actions which I didn’t touch. Whether I’m Nautilus, Firefox, LibreOffice, etc. Changes move/change automatically. This doesn’t happen all the time which is why I used words like, “sometimes is triggering them”. Don’t know what though.

I mostly use Wayland since it’s a default. In the new user, I didn’t change the default setting i.e Wayland.

The touchpad kernel error message is there since the beginning of the era (a very long time ago). It had no major side effect. Its ignorable.

OK, so that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a click.

Can we have a concrete example—what happens in Firefox? Does the page automatically reload which makes you think that the reload button is being activated somehow?

Can we have the output of journalctl -b in a boot where you’ve seen the issue please?

Yes, pages reload automatically. Github options are selected automatically. Nautilus jumps to another directory automatically. LibreOffice options get selected automatically. etc.

The output of journalctl -b is so huge. Would this would be enough?!

Very odd—we really do need to look at the logs to see what may be causing this. Graphical glitches should not result in “actions”. At the moment, I don’t really have a good idea of what may be causing this.

I don’t see anything relevant there. Can you go through the output and post bits that may be relevant? You can also upload the output somewhere, either as a file or a paste?

@ankursinha
Let’s see.

This is the only thing that looks relevant to me:

Mar 29 19:59:25 x gnome-shell[3634]: libinput error: event9 - DLL0641:00 06CB:7621 Touchpad: kernel bug: Touch jump detected and discarded.
Mar 29 19:59:25 x gnome-shell[3634]: See https://wayland.freedesktop.org/libinput/doc/1.19.3/touchpad-jumping-cursors.html for details

But no clue why it doesn’t happen in the new user.

Can you please temporarily undo your customisations one by one to see if the issue goes away? It could be a theme bug, for example, and that’s not easy to debug.

I think I’m experiencing the same issue.
Fedora 35 on sway (but same issue on gnome under wayland)

No issue on the same laptop under windows, or fedora live usb + sway.

Sometimes it works fine for a while, then all of a sudden that’s like something pressed on the touchpad.

When I do that: sudo libinput debug-events --set-click-method=clickfinger I notice, among the “touch jump detected” (and those jumps are weird because I’m sure I have only one finger on the touchpad) I also get:

So far I did many things which @ankursinha requested, like:

  • Disabled all extension
  • Uninstalled ubuntu-yaru theme
  • created new users

But none of any made difference.
sudo libinput debug-events --set-click-method=clickfinger
This command is amazing. Because it showed me the problem in form of logs which is very important for people to believe that there IS a real problem.

The touch_down which the log records are not mine. It’s ghost touching.
Is there a way to fix this? Where should I report and in which Gitlab repo?!

You are on a laptop with a touchpad. Is it possible that those “ghost” touching entries are actually occurring while you are typing? At some point I seem to recall a setting to disable the touchpad while typing so that did not occur though I cannot find it in gnome settings at the moment.

The reason for disabling the touchpad was to prevent totally unintentional touches on the touchpad from interfering with typing. I used to have that happen to me and have actually switched to an external keyboard & mouse to get away from the touchpad. Some touchpads are sensitive enough that having a finger close can be enough for it to be sensed as a touch.

Are you using a vanilla fedora workstation install with gnome? Or have you added something else that might change the way the system manages the touchpad?

The setting you are talking about is inside GNOME Tweaks > Keyboard & Mouse.

“Disabled While Typing” is set to enabled as you can see above.

So far the touchpad was working fine all these months even after F35 update. And then it been a month, something is changed or some update, and this started happening.

Are you using a vanilla fedora workstation?

I use Fedora GNOME, the one that ships and is selected by default.

I have only total 124 packages installed so far, as you can see in the list below. Can you please go through it and maybe you might find some packages that might have changed the way the system manages the touchpad? Any conflicting package? Please do let me know, and will purge it at your command.
