Thereafter I installed several packages and got f38 versions.
I now have a mixed bag and a /boot with:
/boot/vmlinuz-0-rescue-c1673b4c73ea466ea0d580db4ee0d82f
/boot/vmlinuz-6.3.12-200.fc38.x86_64
/boot/vmlinuz-6.3.12-200.fc38.x86_64
/boot/vmlinuz-6.3.11-200.fc38.x86_64
/boot/vmlinuz-6.0.12-100.fc35.x86_64
Of these the all except fc35 boot with a dark screen, no doubt due to not getting the right driver for my old Nvidia Quadro_FX_4800 in an HP Z800.
$ uname -a
Linux fedora 6.0.12-100.fc35.x86_64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Thu Dec 8 16:53:55 UTC 2022 x86_64 GNU/Linux
How can unravel this mess and get to a clean Fedora 38?
Please post the output of dnf list installed '*nvidia*'. That will tell us what is installed for the nvidia drivers.
According to nvidia.com the quadro FX 4800 should function with the very old 340 drivers. We need to see what driver is actually installed and where it was installed from.
That shows the nvidia drivers are not installed.
The installation may be done with the proper drivers using sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia-340xx to install the drivers from rpmfusion if that repo is enabled. Enabling the repo may be done within gnome software by enabling the 3rd party repos.
If you already have the drivers installed, it seems they were not installed from a repo, but possibly directly from nvidia.com and as such should be removed before installation from rpmfusion.

Sorry for all that output. I Suspect you may have assumed that every thing went flawlessly, but missed the above Warning (repeated 3X) in the middle, and my query at the end:
Do I just try rebooting to a f38 kernel, or do I try to follow the [sss_cache] cleanup instructions first (and if I do, how to replace the necessary cached credentials?) ?
Got an Update notification msg in Gnome-Software while running f35 kernel. I let it download and reboot. It did so successfully to an f38 kernel. Problem solved! MANY THANKS!! Any suggestions for cleanup, etc appreciated.
