Sometimes when I move to a new workspace and launch an app, It appears in the previous workspace.
This only happens when using touchpad gestures.
It might be this gnome bug. Does your screen also jump back to the previous workspace after the application is launched?
If it is there is not much you can do to fix the issue. Disabling animations will help but is probably not worth it.
