Who would want silverblue to be shipped with Distrobox than Toolbox?

I would prefer Distrobox because it has GUI Boxbuddy : )

Also, distrobox has more features which users often asked for. I just wished they would find back together.

My only complaint about toolbox is that it doesn’t let you give containers their own home directory. If that issue gets fixed, I would happily use it. Unfortunately, that feature isn’t a priority for the developer.

I totally agree. You can create a survey here, using the “cogwheel” and “Build Poll”.

Distrobox has a couple of essential features for reasonable UX.

  • a variable or CLI argument to use a different homedir. This really separates the container, it still has access to everything but places its dotfiles in its own directory, cleanly. It will not touch your system automatically
  • distrobox upgrade --all to go into each box and execute their individual upgrade commands. This is awesome
  • distrobox assemble to build boxes from config files, which allows less painful version-upgrades. Fedora in podman containers cannot use it’s normal dnf system-upgrade! This means you need to remove the container and create a new one, at least every 13 months. This makes the process a bit easier.
  • more images available. Toolbox follows the approach “we only show what we maintain” which is fine but there should be an opt-in to show more available images
  • rootful distrobox, where you can run virtualization and systemd afaik. Not very secure but still avoids layering
  • distrobox-export --app which copies and manipulates GUI app .desktop entries. This is huge, and while a pretty easy thing, afaik still not there in toolbx
  • a name that you can pronounce, LOL
