Which USB-Wifi hardware on Fedora40 desktop works? Specifically chipsets or vendor model numbers?

I would like to buy a USB wifi adapter for an old X86_64 desktop computer. Any recommendations on which hardware models or chipsets are known to work with Fedora40? Some say they have linux support, but then seem to be referring to Ubuntu, but maybe they also work with fedora? I would prefer one with a wire coming out of an external box, not a dongle.

Hi Grant. Welcome to :fedora: .

I have no experience with external USB WiFi adapters on Fedora, but I have seen recommendations on this forum for dongles with Intel chipset.

Hello @grantrostig ,
Please refer to … https://linux-hardware.org/ as a good place to start with checking hardware compatibility to begin with.

For an old desktop you should consider adding an internal wifi card with antenna connectors. Cables are evil, so eliminating a USB cable avoids one potential failure point.

Look for a vendor that provides details of the chipset they use – some vendors sell assorted chipsets under the same model name so you can’t rely on getting the same hardware that has good reviews from linux users. The LWDB lets you search by the actual USB or PCI ID’s of the chipset.
