What are my options when trying to use office aplcations on fedora?

I want to change to Linux, and I’ve chosen fedora as the distro I’ll use, but I want to be sure that I can do everything I’m able to do on Windows before I switch, I know Linux has alternatives to all the office apps, but for my situation I’m working on shared files in word. What options do I have to run the office apps? Will I have to use the web version, or does wine o bottles work fine?

Libre office is installed by default in most fedora spins.

All of the libreoffice apps are able to read and export MS documents, spreadsheets, and presentations AFAIK (it works for me).

Writer is similar to word. Calc and Impress are the spreadsheet and presentation apps. There are also Draw and Base for graphics and database.

There is seldom need for the web apps and definitely no need for wine or bottles since the libreoffice suite runs native.

One feature (or drawback) is that macros in spreadsheets do not function the same. Security vs risk.

My take on this: you need an O365 subscription and run office in the browser. For me that is the only way it works well.

I’ve tried to run Libreoffice in an environment where everyone is on MS Office, Onedrive and Sharepoint. Forget it, Libreoffice is not gonna the job if you want to get things done and collaborate on shared documents.

O365, in my opinion, can’t be replaced with anything FOSS

It is true that for online sharing, libre office may not be adequate. As long as you are working only on the local machine though I find that libre office exceeds MS office in many ways.

The other thing I do a lot when I want to use my personal Linux machine on one hand but want to get company stuff done on the other hand… they offer Citrix Workspace. I log into that service using the Citrix linux client and I can run the MS apps they offer… though not sure this is applicable in your situation.


I can even get a remote desktop started, as if it was a local VM but fully integrated into the company’s network and services.

I worked in a o365 centric company and used foss successfully.
Libreoffice handled the documents well enough.

For personal use libreoffice is great.
