Videos won't play in youtube etc

I recently purchased a X1 Carbon 11th Gen (Type 21HM, 21HN) Laptop (ThinkPad) (pre-loaded with linux). I am getting error messages when trying to play videos in YouTube or FB - for example “An error occurred. Please try again later. (Playback ID: 3UT4iJxEjO7627L1).” None of the suggested troubleshooting fixes have worked.

My hunch is that when I set up the computer out of the box I configured something that is interfering with video playback.

I’d be grateful for any assistance. I’m not super-literate in coding language, so please keep that in mind in any replies.

Thank you

Do you have “Third party Repositories” enabled ?

What were the “suggested troubleshooting” you did, and what is your inclination in question?

I see this is a common issue.

I made the mistake of not enabling third party repositories in my initial set up. Now I’m unable to locate where I can make change the setting.

I know this is basic, but I appreciate your help.

Enable Third Party Repos from the Software Center easily :

Super Type Software

Then the Hamburger menu click on Software Repositories

Click on Fedora Third Party Repositories

Then you should check for updates :

You can either do this from the software center or the dnf -y update command from a terminal

arch, debian, fedora, ubuntu & over a few dozen other distributions all come under the linux umbrella…are you sure you got fedora? if yes which version of fedora you have? which desktop environment you got? which browser are you using? these are some questions that need to be addressed before diving in to the software center fishing for repositories.

I just upgraded to Fedora 40. I’m using Firefox. I believe my desktop environment is gnome.

Please let me know if you still need help with activating the 3rd party repos.

i activated it, but still not working.

Did you update the computer?

That’s not what I meant. I said did you update the computer meaning did you either type the previous command i provided dnf -y update in a terminal or did you search for new updates through the software center?

I haven’t tried the command line in a terminal window yet.

would i type in anything before``dnf -y update at the prompt?

If you are not comfortable with the command line, just do it from the software center.

Thank you for your help. I’ll continue to do some research on my own.

Show me a screen shot of your Software Center. You should have Updates available, if not there should be a Reload Icon for you to check for new updates.

the lady wishes to self-educate herself…so why impose yourself?

This is not imposing at all. If they do not wish to try these methods, someone else in the future can come across this and it may be useful to them.

This forum isn’t in a vacuum, The pages do come up in search results, and are often crossed referenced on other sites.

if you are so keen on helping in general why not make a tutorial & post it.

yes it is because you quoted her post & insisted on helping :

It took courage for me to reach out to this forum. I asked for help was receiving good information and felt no imposition. I don’t want to be in the middle of this discussion.

There are often “failure to communicate” issues in online forums. Sorry if it made you feel uncomfortable.

Which is exactly why we need to think about other users with the same problem but not as much courage. Working through a problem systematically and documenting the results at each step will provide a record that other less courageous users can follow.
